just interested to see peoples take on cooking equipment

i met a guy who cooked by making 2 holes and a "tunnel" between them and making a fire down the hole, was really effective and the fire burned well into the night.

i myself use a woodburner made from what used to be a tin of pineapples and 2 billy cans

what do you use?

coffee can stove with tabs cut down along the top edge to allow air to flow in underneath the pot, fill the can 3/4 with the used oil behind restaurants and make a wick by coiling a piece of cardboard 4 inches shorter then the can, get the board greasy and light it on fire, free stove!

take another coffee can and cut the bottom off about inch and half or two w/e for last resort frying pan, iv cut one once but didnt cut it all the way across left a strip going upwards to make a handel

oh yeah and uhmm some cans have that wierd coating in them, you can just boil water and boil it off or burn it off, works pretty good, lighter then any frying pan, when it starts to wear down.. there aint no lack of coffee cans around

Steel pot with a latching lid from REI and a white gas stove. The latching lid is nice, helps you conserve fuel since you can have the heat on for a bit and then you can turn the head off, latch the lid and stuff the pot under blankets, and it'll keep cooking for a bit.

i use a tiny msr pocketrocket. It doesn't weigh anything, and fuel is fairly cheap. I need hot food when it gets wet and cold out. Brings me right back to life. The beer can alcho i have played with a bit.

Some folks have criticised it, but for years I've been cooking on a one burner backpacking stove that is fueled by a propane canister. Those propane canisters seem to last forever when all your doing is heating up soup of cooking ramen noodles. I've had one small propane canister last for months under these conditions. The only problem I've ever had was when a paranoid cop (I guess he thought I was a terrorist planning to blow up something) asked what the propane was for but was fine when I showed him the stove and said it was for cooking.

What I am wondering with the DIY frying pan, is exactly what are you using to cut the can with? A saw? Metal shears? A multitool is the only thing I carry which can do that, but it'll probably take about an hour to do to make it...

Alcohol stove. You can pick one up for about 10/15 bucks new or with a little bit of DIY skills you can make one out of two coke can bases, however for durability the homemade versions don't last more then two months with daily use. (instructions can be found easily on many web sites). Full throttle energy drink makes a can with a strange lid on it which is perfect for the top half of the burner. These run best on fuel line anti freeze.

hour to work to make $7 or an hour of work to make a frying pan

cut the can with anything that works? i use a fulltang knife, or pliyers bending back and forth, or wire snips, or sheer cutters

the edges can be beveled down with pliers or fancy mec multitools (i prefer traveling with small visegrips, they are in most cases allot more useful then a multitool and stronger)
on that note, small actual carbon metal file, visegrips, carbon knife, mini multy head screwdriver thats pretty much everything that a multi tool is except multitools need to be treated sensually.. im starting to not trust all these products.. lighter faster stronger, i dont buy it literally. or lift.. gypsies traveled without polyester sleeping bags..
im learning small steps to getaway from the plastic, not cause i hate it, cause it just doesnt work, id rather make a deer skin coat that turns into a sleeping bag then have to deal with a combustible plastic sack that always rips. i find it more worth to carry a deerskin sleepingbag/coat then metal cookware, and stoves etc, right now i and a friend acquired 4 deer skins from a butcher that were gonna be dumpstered otherwise.. its a long slow tiring process of fleshing and taning, smoking but i hope the end finished project will turn out, ill upload pictures once done

aanyways

i bevel the side of the handle upwards to stabilize itself, poke a hole on the end of the handle and carabean it somewhere

yeah we all remember what happens to the flame thrower guy in the opening scene of Saving private ryan:)

Haha, but you can always wrap the canister up in your sleeping bag when you toss your bag off the train. But I've always been afraid of carrying pepperspray and having it explode on me when I take a fall off some bike or train...

If its canned food I simply pierce a small hole in the lid and place the whole thing on to hot coals its ready in a matter of mins soon as you see juices/sauce come out... I lift it out with the can opener used to make the hole, place it on a rock and finish opening the can. And then enjoy! ;)

(hopefully I don't need to say this but, Don't ever place a sealed can in a fire!)

For other foods I will improvise whatever I can if I don't have a set of cooking dishes with me. I have cooked eggs and pancakes with hot rocks, meat strung on sticks etc..

I use an MSR Dragonfly. It's expensive, loud, heavy (~1lb. just for the stove) and kind of bulky, but nothing out there can burn as wide a variety of liquid fuels. On full blast it boils water in no time, and it has great simmer control.

Yeah, and the plastic used for can liners is loaded with bpa. It's one of the more difficult applications to find an alternative type of plastic for. One of the biggest sources of resistance to further research and possible bans of bpa here in the states (Canada already has a ban in place).

That wood gas stove looks cool as fuck, I'm going to look more into that. I know that during world war II, due to fuel rationing, alot of people were running their vehicles off of wood gas stoves. I read about some old timers recently firing them up again when the gas prices were going through the roof.
