Best boots I've ever had, and still have, is the standard issue norwegian M77 military boot. They are extremely comfortable, roomy enough for wool socks, and they're extremely hard to ruin!

steel toe steel shank, amazing support and comfort, warm.. only downside to these guys is that, because of their lightweight construction and waterproofing, they aren't easily repairable.. not in the same sense that a sturdy pair of loggers are repairable you know. but they hold up.

so this summer my old kicks started talking as soon as i made if to the west coast so i had to find something new. those boots were pretty good http://www.zappos.com/timberland-chocorua-trail-mid-with-gore-tex-membrane-brown lasted 2 years of daily wear but the tread was gone after one leaving me to eat shit constantly when walking up or down hills. traveling broke and homeless didn't provide me with many options for replacing them so i just duct taped em till i made it back east. all the while deliberating what nice new bourgeois shoes i would try to get. as for me i knew i wanted a boot that would last at least 2 years of 3-4 seasoned daily wear(goretex for summer and winter) with soles that would last as long as the rest the boot (viberam makes the best and the over the toe sole is essential). some people like steel toe but really its totally impractical if you don't actually NEED it. the steel plate just tears through the shoe and you're left with a holey shoe. anyway these are what i decide on http://www.rei.com/product/721359/vasque-wasatch-gtx-hiking-boots-mens . i know they're fucking expensive as all hell but if you jack enough shit from REI ( like $60 silk sleeping bag liners that fit in your pocket)and rack up the store credit you can get then for dirt cheap (i got mine for $30) and if you or someone you know has a membership ($20 for a lifetime, i got lucky cause my girl has one) you can get these with a warrantee so you can replace them for free when they go to shit (im hoping for 3 years).

strange, the two boots you linked to are the two pairs of boots I had gone through before my current pair. the vasques I can't comment on because I found them in a free box and the soles had already begun to crack. the timberlands though were terrific for their price range and got me a comfortable few months until a couple of the eyes fell out and my feet began to ache with all the walking I was doing.

I've walked / worked miles and miles in these cats I have now and my feet / back never hurt.

I've tried two pairs of Columbia waterproof boots and both pair killed my back. I have a bad L5, and I think I need a pair of boots that have a flat profile. These are heel higher than toe. I was brook and they were cheep. Doc Martins are expensive. Maybe I'll look at Red Wing??

Yep, they are quite good. Wore them myself as I was in the army (10 months service) over 20 years ago. Also travelled with the one pair I had left, but unfortunately the sole came off on one (due to age, not bad quality), so I left them in Brighton. Had no money for repair atm (which would have benn possible).

Heard the older ones (like I had) were better then the new ones, but that are only rumors.

I wear a pair of Merrel hiking boots. I prefer a lightweight shoe, but unfortunately these aren't slip on like you prefer. Nevertheless, they are quality and durable. Maybe something to look into if you're interested. I also feel you on the shoe size, I'm a 14

I just picked up a pair of Belleville's 700 line. Genuine cowhide, vibram sole and gortex lining. Plus they're all black and not suede. I love them so far and have already worn them around town for 4 solid days with hardly any discomfort, unlike the old pairs of Docs I've had. My feet actually feel better with them now. I've never paid so much for boots in my life, but it was worth it. Obviously they haven't seen steel yet though..

I ended up with a pair of Austrian Jager boots.Suprisingly made by Volke.Darn things are 11 inches double layer leather with a vibram style sole for 45 with shipping.
