Hey man if it works for you right on. Mine isn't too much different. Definitely good to have a decent bag in the cold ain't it? Haha how do you like those small guitars? I tried a kid size a few times and the fretting and strings were too convoluted for me

I'd say maybe for weight ditch small electric razor because the charger itself is heavy. I have one as well and found just using scissors on my face will get you as far as ya need and saves weight and they are good for so much else. Where ya headed this winter

Ya I won't do anything less than a zero degree bag, gotta be warm.

I love this small guitar, not too much different than a regular size one as far as playing it.

The electric razor um talking about is like a pair of electric clippers. It's supper tiny. I could use scissors I guess.

I'm trying my luck at my first freight hopping this winter. Leaving bend, OR and heading whatever direction the first train pulls in is going probably up to portland/seattle.

Some people will be like "Noooo you cant travel during the winter" and this is proof that you can, if you get the right gear.

Its a big investment, a lot to carry and prepare for, but thanks for demonstrating how its largely a matter of gearing up and making the investment. Maybe for anyone who wants to complain about winter and naysay they can see there are options, but they come at a price.

Ya they are brand new. 25 bucks @ Big 5! I've had 'em before, they break in quick.

I was considering wearing my Wildland firefighting boots but they are fucking heaving and too expensive to get fucked up walking ballast all day.

One of the main reasons I like to travel in winter (other than the fact that I work in summer) is that no one is out there, and the people that are usually are chill. Not dumass junkie oogles that I see in summer everywhere.

I don't like the cold per se, but I like being able to go anywhere in the country because of the gear I have. I like cold alot more than heat. And if you get sick of the cold, there is always the desert!

I've been doing it for years now so, pretty used to it.

Hell yeah man I spend most days outdoors in winter I'll be out in the OR north cali western nv country in October. Plan to walk a lot but hitch as well. Got my 5 pound Wiggys zero degree bag and a free Columbia jacket and close to half dozen good socks. My dog will be furred up for winter so he's good. I'd rather be in a warm bag than on top of it unable to sleep because of heat. It's early fall in North pa already and I'm funkin love it.

Im excited for winter!! No its gonna be hard at times, but most of us here love the struggle. I spent the extra dollars and got this -20degree dridown bag on amazon, getting my insulated carhartt coveralls i used to use for work and other winter gear when i hit back to homebase tomorrow. Getting my layers and seein my peoples for the first time in months then hittin the road again.

Please everyone be safe out there. People are sayyin the winter is supposed to be harsh this year. Weird year for weather already so.
Im wondering if i should bring a different pad though. I have a blowup thermarest, but i dont know how bad it will be ridin on a frozen chunk of metal. Think my sleepin bag should be enough though. Any input would be appreciated. Also might get some hydrophobic spray and put on my coveralls. I dont have too much of an idea of what im steppin into, but i feel like this might be one of my best learning experiences ever.

Definitely gotta get boots or warmer shoes if i plan to keep my feet.

How much does all that weigh? (just your pack, not the stuff outside) I picked up an osprey 65 AG and have heard they don't work too well above 35-40 pounds, with yours maybe being closer to 40. is yours holding up ok? They have that lifetime repair option which is pretty cool. anyway im liking what you're carrying. Might just use it to buff my own setup ;)

Everything together in dry weight is about 40 lbs.

The pack is amazing. It is holding up really well, and has so far stood up to ~1000 miles of train riding.

There are a few items I have ditched, such as the smiley, razor, and a couple other things. So its a bit lighter now.

Awesome list. I always used trash compactor bags for bag liners. Tough and work great. Nothin beats a warm bag in winter. My bag is only 20 degree but I also have 2 lightweight down jackets, army issued poly under pants and shirt. Wool is excellent for the winter. Gets wet and stays warms.

Those trash compactor bags are great resistant too. I think I might be jaded by my work in the outdoor industry and buy into some gear I know is expensive and overrated tho.

Wool. For sure. I have a few pairs of wool socks, although my long underwear is polyester wool blend, as well as most of my outerwear + goretex.

I wish I had a pair of straight merino wool long underwear!

So far on this trip I have run into GREAT weather. But it did freeze on me in Pasco and Bend. I cant wait to test everything without a fire in Idaho, Montana, or the high desert or Utah, AZ and NM this winter! I'm kind of sadistic like that....

If you can make it towards Indian, Ohio/michigan border I'd totally travel with you. I've never hopped before but I love trains and travel. Got all my gear ready to go. I love winter travel compared to summer travel. As long as a person has the right gear, all is good. The only time I start to worry is when it gets to -20 or below.
