depends on the situation and material of the brown work coat leather is almost always more durable. If the brown work coat is made of canvas yeah it will last for quite a while but leather is usually king depending on quality of construction and expected use and depending on enviroment. If you expect heavy wear and tear I would go with leather more durable but canvas would be easier to stitch up.

well if weight is an issue yeah the work coat would be the better option in the short term, You still have 2 months or so before it gets cold asf depending on location.Leather can save your ass in winter though.

I know its heavy but It might be a good idea to hang on to it Idk how hustling is in Canada but it might be hard to replace it if needed.

My blue Hooded insulated Carhart coat bought brand new 4 years ago has lasted me that whole time traveling hard, riding trains, squatting, etc. through all four seasons and its kept me warm and mostly dry.

I don't think I would take a leather jacket wearing train Rider seriously. Summer tramper maybe??

Gore Tex. Anything else is too heavy.

I wouldn't say goretex is the *only* option but I agree that it is the best if available.

I once camped in the redwoods with a T-shirt, jeans and a hanes jacket. (it was all I could afford lol) But back then I was young, dumb and well, you know :p

I nearly froze to death (it was December) and I wouldn't recommend it but it thought me a valuable lesson; You don't need amazing gear to live, but it helps.

If you know what you're doing you can hitch or maybe even hop with just the clothes on your back.

But really, go with goretex.
