Spent some more time in New England (particularly in Maine) and I was sort of disappointed. I come from the suburbs, so my preoccupation with the inner city comes mostly from my jealousy at the fact that poor black areas naturally erect networks of interpersonal support to account for their lack of money. Social alienation doesn't exist in these small societies. Maybe it's just a black thing; I haven't been able to find any white equivalent outside the ghost of Oregon Hill....
