This is the current bike/set up I'm riding. It's actually @Matt Derrick bike, he was so generous to let me borrow it, so I'm taking it for a tour currently. Thanks again Matt!

Hell yeah man it's treating me good so far. Carrying a new chain and 2 new tires with me, can't believe the carcass hasn't shredded off the rear tire yet. It's cracked along the whole circumference, just won't give up! I'm running it till it goes! Ragbrai is July 21-27, and fuck yes I'm riding it this year! After that I hope to start making my way to the desert sometime mid August. Going to have to figure out how to get some more funds along the way if I want to be a lazy bookworm again this winter! Hope to see you there man!

Did a 1,000 miles this summer thru the NY southern tier Syracuse to Olean and the Adirondacks. I surprised myself being 65 that physical problems. I felt healthier biking 8-10 hours a day, rather than sitting home on my ass. I had a custom back rim built [Rick Bikes Buffalo is the best] with heavy duty spokes and a double walled rim.The back rim takes on such stress you can blow spokes but I had no problems with my heavy duty rims. Double Kevlar Vittorian Randonneur tires kept me flat free. My bike is a 10 year old Raleigh Route 1 with 20,000 miles on it. Everything has been replaced 3x.

This is a bike I rode from Mississippi to Orlando and back six or so years ago. Sold it to a friend after the trip and went west to Portland. Recently moved back and was shocked to find that he still had it and being the nice guy he is he sold it back for what I could give him. Tried to ride to Miami, but found myself giving up only as far as Fort Walton Beach. Rode back. Tried again to get out of Mississippi and rode via hwy-90 to Corona lockdown New Orleans. Spent the days riding around sweating and feeling to worn out from riding around and sweating to skateboard at the skatepark which was the only reason what for I even went. Found a schoolbus at a closed catholic school in city park to sleep in at night. Rode in just after dark and put all my stuff on the bus and put the bike under the bus. Slept across the row of seats straight as a board. God it was hot. After a couple days of that I realised it wasn't workin out and when I stopped lying to my poor mother about how well it was going and how the girl I knew in town was letting me crash on her porch, she drove her seventy year old derriere the two hours from biloxi and thats when I finally opened up a bit about how I'm at a loss for how to keep living after setting myself up to lose so many times. Sure hate askin for a ride, but it sure was nice having mommy come pick me up. This was a good bike back then and it's still a good bike, but it ain't takin me nowhere now. Anyhow, some photos.

Just did a weeklong bikepacking trip on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington! One of the days we did 20 miles of singletrack on the Advneture Trail! I'm all for gravel and trails, would be totally cool if I never toured on a paved road ever again, ha

On a bicycle, in the desert
I've just completed another long trip on another style of bike. The pacific coast from Olympia to LA to phoenix on a 7speed folding. I had the bike ony sailboat and figured I just go with what I own. I didn't know if the bike would make it but outside of new pedals and a new tire it held up. The bag on the handbares was to try to balance weight but it was annoying so everything rides in the backpack now. I've thought about switching back to a mountain bike and doing dirt but the folding bike is so convenient I may stick with it till it breaks.

Do it! I’m much happier on gravel and mud than fighting with cars and near misses on pavement, but I can still do that on my Troll when necessary. It’s a solid bike; I only wish I ordered it with belt drive. Here’s two different setups I’ve used:
