Detroit, to live?

I looking for a new homebase out of Minneapolis. I've heard some things about Detroit, but it seems to be in extremes. I've heard it's not bike-friendly and the public transit is a mess. I would need a car to get around. But, I know a lot of punks and hippies moved that way and they are turning the neighborhoods into better areas. I also need to be able to do the basics - get a job, get on public assistance, find a place to stay, etc.

Does anyone have any educated input on the area and advice?

I'm a Michigan native living in Saginaw MI. Im also interested in relocating to Detroit. Haven't spent much time there, but I'd say it is a sound decision. Michigan is a great state. There are plenty of jobs in the cities. Are you thinking of buying, renting, or squatting? I've talked with you before. I'd be down to talk about potentially squatting, or co-livving. I'm a cool person. Im basically straight edge aside from an occasional beer. I weld for a living, and have a lot of skillz, tools, and transportation. I helped start a squat in Nola, and my friends own it now. I may be working full time in Lansing soon, but I still like to explore all potential options, and adventures. Lets start a sweet squat or, buy a house in detroit, and invite cool people to join us! Have a good one!

I'm from Detroit and I fucking love and miss it. Rent in actual deteoit is pretty high now thx to gentrification, so check out Hamtramck or highland park which are mini cities inside of Detroit. I used to live in Hamtramck it's great and I'm definitely moving back one day. I would say it's bike friendly but there's essentially no public transit. You either have to bike walk or drive a car, but u can find both bikes and cars for very cheap all over Michigan. Jobs are hard to come by in actual detroIt so most people have to get a job in the suburbs unless they manage to get into a bar or restaurant gig. If u can't find a spot to live right away try to contact someone at the trumbulplex in Woodbridge (anarchist collective), and people in Detroit are generally open to couch surfers, but it's also still pretty easy to squat since there's still so much abandoned shit. I would squat on the west side of outer Detroit or stay on the northeast end near Hamtramck. If you have a tent u could probably find a place to crash on the north east side also but note the northeast side outside of Hamtramck can be dangerous so just stay alert. If u have anymore questions let me know, I love Detroit and I encourage everyone to at least visit there!

It's called "Detoilet" for a reason....most of it is a total shithole...never venture south of 696. I lived in Warren for 3 years...the only time I went near downtown, was to a Tigers game, or to Mexicantown for dinner...then got the hell back out of there.

Thanks for demonstrating that you live in the past. Downtown is quite safe now. 696 well that probably still holds till 8 mile, I"m not sure about in between there though. Almost got jacked in 8 mile, my spidey senses were up though.

I wouldn't go downtown after sunset. The area surrounding the Greyhound bus station is far from "safe". Hamtramck....forget it, unless you have a death wish. Woodward Ave from 8 Mile into town....again, far from "safe". I know....it wasn't that long ago, when I lived there.
