Ted Kaczynski was right….

I'll admit, I haven't read "Industrial Society and it's Future"....yet. But summarized it via chatGPT. I'm an Anarchist. But I call myself a Green/Eco Anarchist. Ted argued for the complete dissolution of industrial society, correct? What's the logical extreme if his goal was achieved? Do I know how to make a stone axe? Yeah. Do I know how to do flint-knapping? Sure I do. Do you have any idea how hard that is??? Hard boyos. Very hard. What are we gonna do with people in wheelchairs? Cystic fibrosis? Mobility issues in general? Cancer? Glioblastoma? When one purports their ideology, you must always take it to the logical extreme because if you can't reconcile the logical extreme of your argument, you must reconvene.

So was Ted right? Somewhat. In so far that industrial society causes harm, sure as hell it does. But do we actually want the complete dissolution of industrial society? Nah, the only person who's ever lived in true primitivism is Les Stroud with his wife. 1 year they lived in the bush with only primitive tools. Did they get giardia? Damn skippy they did!

Ted didn't live primitively. He used firearms and his cabin was built with a pot-bellied stove and made with plywood. Ted didn't live Anarcho-primitivism. He told people about it. Sodomizing his neighbors dogs with a knife/spear? Shooting dogs with his rifle in the rectal area so that they died slowly of internal bleeding and sepsis?

Was Ted right or was he wrong?

He was both.

I think Ted did have several good points about how modern convenience was taking a toll, but I think that his detachment from the social aspect of it all kind of devalues his idea of an ideal future. He thought the people should just sort of be over racism and sexism by now, and didn't really consider that these previously long running institutions might still be in effect or having a lasting effect. He also didn't consider, or really care, that for some people living off grid is just not possible, not only would there be no middle of nowhere if everyone decided to go off into the woods, but some people need more immediate community support.

I do personally believe that our reliance on tech and convenience has done us a disservice, and I personally would love the ability to remove myself from it and live independently, but I know that's not possible for everyone. There needs to be a balance, because there is a lot of tech that has greatly improved a lot of people's quality of life, not to mention saving peoples lives.

While I can recognize that as a movement gains more people it does sort of stray from its original mission, but I don't think that is the bad thing he made it out to be. More people need to get involved because different perspectives and ideas are very important to create a future that will benefit the collective, rather than a small group within. He definitely took an "I know best" perspective because of his intelligence, but one person can not create a functional future for the masses, not matter how smart, it will have to happen on a smaller scale, smaller collectives of people for them to decide how they want to, and need to live to support themselves and their communities.


I think he provided a very good starting block for some very aspirational ideas of a future, but I don't think his ideal is the end all be all a lot of people make it out to be.

Am I the only person here that thinks kaczynski wasn't nearly the folk hero people make him out to be?

I'm pretty pro technology but very anti-capitalism.

Yeah I think there is a balance, modern technology is an important tool, but I think that our current systems have been selling it to us as a lifestyle, and it has become the structure and meaning of our lives rather than a beneficial facet.

These ideas did not begin with him and they don't end with him either, there's need for improvement and a more community minded focus. He was smart and brought up some good points, but his disregard for others definitely seeps through when you read his stuff.
