North Carolina?

I'm in the Twin Cities, and looking to make a trip this fall to Asheville, and/or Boone, NC. Wondering if anyone has any useful info about these towns? Also would really like to hop a train, if there's a direct route.

There's a lot of good camping around Asheville / Western NC. Good food so maybe a bunch of dumpsters in AVL?? Sorry that's all I've got right now, I've just moved back into the area. Cheers

The only trains really worth riding thru Asheville are a Chattanooga-linwood , linwood-chatti pair, goes thru Knoxville sevier yd. Also coal from WV which goes thru Newport TN.
I dunno kinna tough at either end to figure out. There's an old growth forest like 30 miles away that's worth checking out, also the Wasilik Poplar which i believe is one of the oldest poplars in the world

Asheville has a lot of travelers and campers and therefore a lot of restrictions enforced on them. Both places are beautiful.

Thx....Do those restrictions make it tough to be homeless in Ash.? Also, are there decent resources for someone to get a fresh start?

As far as coming for a fresh start, I would say yes.....because I've recently done it . I lived in AVLproper from 2000-03. I'm currently living in a cabin in the woodsoutside Asheville. There are bunches of traveling kids in Asheville...check out food not bombs downtown.....the winter will be less severe than MN

I've lived in Asheville since 2008, and it seems like it's getting harder to safely be homeless there. It has historically been a haven for travelers and hobos, but the separation between the affluent and those on the streets is growing. More and more high-end businesses are eating up the downtown, which means more people with money and reasons to be annoyed by hobos and even buskers. The rules on busking in downtown are iffy and seem to vary by who you ask. Last I heard, the job market was pretty tough, with so many college-age kids there. It's mountainous and kinda spread out, so it's hard to get places. There are virtually no open dumpsters, although Food Not Bombs is still operating. I hate to speak poorly of it, Asheville is a beautiful city. I just thought I'd add my belief that it's getting harder and harder to be a broke traveler there. Hope this helped somehow.
