I carry around a two piece medium action ugly stick Shakespeare spinner combo. Kinda shitty but I’ve used it in salt and fresh for about 2 years now..not bad for $20. I change the line out every solstice. Always been mono, but I think I might try braided next spool. I used to carry a nice graphite 3-piece fly rod and a fancy aluminum reel that was gifted to me but I was hiking over a scree field a few years back and tripped. Rod was in my hand and I went down that way, snapped the rod and the reel dented enough that I couldn’t move it. Luckily I had enough slack out and still about 6ft of rod that I just kept fishing 😁 fly fishing is great lol. Pretty similar to cane pole fishing!

Anyone just use line and hook? Or a paddle? Saw people doing it in Mexico and thought it might be a fun way to roll.
Also, what do y'all do about licenses since I'm guessing you change states pretty often?
Used to fish and always wanted to do it traveling

I do but it's hit or miss, and it's murder on the hands if you're only using line n hook but that can be remedied with gloves or a tough long sleeve shirt to wrap the line around when you get a bite.

Even still I've bagged some pretty big sockeye out here and it's perfect for stealth fishing as you can tie the line to your foot or bibs or whatever and most people just think you're relaxing by the river. As far a license goes I personally ignore them completely. Hope this helps ya a bit.
With gratitude, -Ian

I have a generic shakespeare fishing rod that I got from a flea market for a few bucks. It can be nice to have a fish dinner while on the road. I don't worry about licenses, I am not sure of the implications of this but I personally have never had an issue.

Honestly it depends on the state i got caught in alaska once they hit me with a $1000 fine and 2 weeks in jail

I think Alaska is one of the stricter states in that regard. A lot of places have free temporary licenses if you just ask for one. There's also a huge difference from trying to catch your dinner and commercial fishing. I think a lot of places the cops would much prefer you be fishing on the outskirts of town than begging for food downtown. Long story short I've never bothered getting one.
