longtime lurker firsttime poster : ) i'm originally from Philadelphia born and raised, but i've spent about 15 years in various cities around the world including 4 consecutive years backpacking and working abroad on a WHV in New Zealand, France, England and Wales when i was in my mid-20s. i went to college in NYC and lived all over the city for several years so i have lots of experience with the ins and outs of the subway system and Brooklyn and Manhattan in particular. i was up in the Hudson Valley working at a glass studio and a grow farm for awhile and came back to Philly due to my dad being in hospice. i work from my laptop and i've been thinking seriously about saving some money and just camping or squatting this summer while the weather is warm. i'm pretty familiar with Philly but hoping to meet some folks who might show me some good spots to pitch a tent where i won't get hassled by the oink squad, also i've been interested for some time in trainhopping (especially for when things get colder) and would be super happy to make some contacts with experienced rail ppl who might show me around a yard or something...i have a pretty diverse skillset and can usually offer something in return whether it's city advice or something technology related or etc. thanks for reading!

Welcome, it sounds like you've got some great experience, I'd love to know of some spots in Philly myself, I'm very familiar with NYC but not so much Philly, it'd be nice to learn more. Hope you find what you're looking for here!

I,grew up in philly and there aren't many super great long term camping spots anymore but stealth camping by the skateparkss and hopouts are usually pretty cool. As far as squats go your best bets are deep west (like cobbs creek) and further north by kenzo or Cecil. I scoped out a few before I left town a few years ago. The corner of 55th and Paschall has 2 that if they're still vacant theyre good to go. Just dont blow an,up,cus I'm heading, back soon and wanna pop one. If youre still looking in,august Ill be back in town to stay in a different one that we may be willing to,take another in

awesome, do you know where exactly in Kenzo? there was a big encampment along the rail tracks off of Allegheny in between Collins and White a couple summers ago but not sure if that got busted up when they broke up the other tent cities.

I have hopped in the past and know of some hop outs in Philly / near Philly, but I've never personally tried them myself. If you ever want to pursue trainhopping send me a DM and I'll give you the vague directions I have and/or ask if I can tag along! In terms of encampments, there are some overgrown places I've known people to camp in a few years back along Cresheim trail in Germantown/Chestnut Hill. There is also, next to the Trolley Car Diner across the street, a long stretch of abandoned and overgrown train tracks where one could conceivably pitch tent if said tent isn't enormo. It's a shmancy place, but it's far from the city where the pigs are on high alert for the homeless, and its not overstuffed with tweakers + the like. Ofc it makes sense to stay close to the city for multiple reasons if you're transient, but its an option.
