I figure it would be a great place to spend the colder months or for even longer term, but have some questions.

1. Are there any laws against busking?
2. Do they like American songs there, or should I learn some local stuff?
3. Can you make enough money to get gas and food through busking, and if not, what are some other ways?
4. I'm in my late 40's. I know a lot of road dogs are a lot younger and tend not to trust older folks. Would I have that kind of issue there?
5. What are some of the better places to be road-dogging it down there, and what are some places to avoid?
6. I'm diabetic. Would I have a hard time subsisting on just meat, veggies and beans/legumes down there?

Any other tips for being down there long term would be great! Thanks!

You can definetly husk and make money in the bigger cities. Meat and beans is the majority of the diet down there and it's very cheap. There's nowhere to avoid. Granted some areas are more violent than others, this changes day to day and is largely drug related cartel violence. You are not a target. I liked Chiapas best, friendliest people.

You might have trouble busking in rural areas and small towns, people are pretty poor.

Thanks! What are some of the larger cities besides Mexico City? That place looks so huge, I'm a bit intimidated.

I'm thinking I spend a couple of weeks in a city making money, then head out to rural areas to camp for a while, then back to the city or on to another city to make money again. Rinse and repeat.

Go to San Ignacio cerro gordo. Find my cousins and they'll put you on an agave crew. Everything is done right there on site. Remember, like champagne, its not tequila unless its from that district. Jalisco. Michoacan. Stay out of the cities- too many pinche gabachos. Lol you best learn Malaguena salerosa at the very least if you intend on meeting the ladies. Or making money. Ain't nobody gonna put up with wagon wheel.

I'd echo what other people have said. I've seen busking done in Guadalajara and Mexico City, but most other places you'd have a very hard time. There are people who need a kick down much more than any of us do, and they aren't there voluntarily.

With that said, I've never been to any of the "Americanized" parts of Mexico. Maybe in Baja you'd do better. Just guessing though.

I apologize for not being directly on topic... but in the line of the conversation...
Since I am not often socially or musically savvy, yet wagon wheel intrigued me.
Then I found a cover.

Bob Dylan is popular in Mexico...?

Fuck I hate that song more than I hate a catfart in a closed room. And thats sayin alot. I hate it more than I hate Bourgeois respectability. I hate it more than I hate Dick Cheney.
Up2Eleven, there is a man named Vicente Fernandez whom you should consider to be yr Muse. He is like Goethe to the Germans. Pushkin to Russia. Hugo to the French.

1. Law is what the police decide it is. Some places are friendly and others not.
2. The beatles are popular. You should likely learn the most famous songs. And some Mexican ones such as Cielito Lindo
3. I would suggest making money in another country then living cheap in Mexico.
4. Don't know.
5. Too big a question. You can find gringos in Ajijic and San Miguel de Allende, but those places are more expensive. Morelia is nice as far as cities go.
6. There is a lot of food in markets.
