Europe to the America

I had this nice dream, or more of an aim, to reach America per boat. I've read a lot about it now, and I must say that I don't think I'll ever get to that dream and I guess I will just simply buy a plane ticket to cross the Atlantic ocean. Although I do not know yet where I would like to start my American hitchhiking journey.

What are your thoughts and experiences with hitching a boat?

last week i was just a signature away from a boat to america. i was hitching south. i was in denmark and this lady i was hitching with told me all about how to get there, she was a cargoship engineer or some shit. i ended up in an office recruiting people for boats to america and chile and stuff. i ended up not doing it as i was already heading south, and could do it on the way back.
then i got arrested on the border to germany, and for some reason they sent me back to this shit hole.

when are you going? im leaving as fast as possible. im turning 18 next march, then they cant keep me here anymore. leaving earlier if possible though. i would like some one atleast in the start because going to a new continent is prolly a bit hard.

oh wait youre german! man fuck your police they suck hard. its easy to hitch there though super jealous.

I carry a Dutch passport, still valid for 3 years lel. Who the fuck knows where I will be when it's time to get a new one. A worry for later.

I have no idealistic time plan on when I want to go to be honest, all I can say before summer. Money is my biggest issue at the moment as I just lost my freaking job. The plan is to take some retard job for a month, save that money and head out.

The fucking problem is that I'm really discouraged by the stories I read on the internet about hicking a boat to the other side of the ocean that I might just end up buying me a plane ticket to get into Mexico or some other country, Brazil would be great as well I guess, and start going from there. North/South, I don't even know, just that I want to go.

Oh not to mention that I still need to get me some new gear. At least a new bag and a tent. Sleeping bag is pretty much the only thing I have left, although I could do with a new smaller one. That's my number one priority worry right now, the gear. Decent gear costs a lot so. And I plan on going for a long time, so I better not be cheap on it either I guess.

you dont need a tent in america now unless youre going way north. i made it fine last week with a tarp and my bag. if you work on a boat to murrica then you´ll make monney that way. idk. how much gear do you need? all i bring is
tarp
sleeping bag
sleeping pad
pack (duh)
knife + multitool
reapir stuff, glue ducktape all that stuff
extra shirt and socks and underwear
toothbrush and a few empty plastic bags
rope.

how much are plane tickets? i wanna fucking go right now.

edit: looks like theyre all around 500 bucks. shits expensive.

True, shit is expensive, but so is hitchhiking a sail boat as it seems.

About the freighter ship work and stuff, from what I've read you need certificates and shit like that to be able to work on them, none of them I have.

About the gear, I pretty much have nothing anymore besides a sleeping beg. I'm not just going intentionally to the USA, I want to explore and travel through Mexico and Honduras and these kind of countries, or whatever comes on my road. Therefor I think a tent will come in handy, I don't plan to visit big cities either.

If we're talking yachts here I wouldn't find it fun personally. I mean night watch for one, stuck with the same people for a long damn time in a small space, lack of sleep. Food and water rations. Staring at the fucking sea and seeing no land for a long damn time. People start getting short with each other you know. Good things if you're on a sailboat you can learn to sail. Time alone to think? See more stars than you've ever seen before. Fresh air.. Anyway I'm not saying it's terrible tons of people do it and theres probably all kinds of smart shit on them now radar alarms autopilot etc. just after being on a sailing boat for 2 weeks i was fucking sick of it glad to get off. If you can find a ship or something big to get on that'd be cool but I don't know how you'd swing that. Unless you're gonna put the time in go ask around at ports, I dunno, boating forums shit like that I would just get the cheapest plane ticket to any where on the continent of america. Must be able to get something under 400. You could pull that together over a couple months.

But if you want to get a yacht or maybe something bigger you could head to west Portugal and hit up ports try and get a lift to the Azores most people transporting boats or sailing to americas will stop off there to resupply. That's what I'd do anyway. If you offer to generally help out and come across cool. Have your own food, maybe even get a big water container and any other stuff so you're not gonna be a drain on them if they've already got all their stuff. Anything you bring to the table will hugely help your chances. I'd take a CV like say you're looking for boat work to fill in your summer gap just so they don't think you're gonna chuck them overboard into the atlantic and make off with their boat kinda thing. Maybe over thinking it now. Anyway, yeah. Plane ticket.

Cape Verde is the best place where you can find yachts (or Captain ) who will be able to take you . You need be there in october /november . Autumn -time when yachts taking the passage by Atlantic. Then and only then you will find the way to the other side of Atlantic .
