Hey folks! It's finally here! I've published my first book, The Anarchist's Guide to Travel - A manual for future hitchhikers, hobos, and other misfit wanderers. This is a how-2 book for those interested in learning more about underground travel and how to prepare for their first travel adventure. This book will answer most 'beginner' questions we get on StP, and covers multiple modes of underground travel, including hitchhiking, train hopping, sailing, bike touring, living in a vehicle, etc. How to survive on the road, find places to sleep, how not to starve, find work, tips specific to LGBT folks, and all kinds of interesting and educational information. Even if you're not new to living a nomadic lifestyle, it's likely this book will still have a few tips you haven't thought of. The book spans 243 pages, with almost all the illustrations inside done by our own @awkwardshelby (they also designed the cover)! Here are a few pictures of the inside to give you a better idea of what you're getting (click on the thumbnails below):

From the Amazon description / back cover:

Ever dream of dropping everything to adopt a minimalist lifestyle and explore the world -- but didn't know where to start? This how-to book will show you how to join the traveler underground; a world of hitchhikers, hobos, migrant punks, and other misfit travelers that don't fit into the standard mold. In these pages, you'll find out how to survive on next to nothing by getting rid of rent and other expenses, resources for finding seasonal work, and advice on saving enough money to last through your next leg of travel. It continues with a basic guide to almost every style of underground travel including hitchhiking, train hopping, van-dwelling, bike touring, and sailing. You'll even find a few tips for surviving mainstream forms of travel like charter buses and airplanes. Each chapter includes a list of books, websites, and other resources to expand your knowledge beyond the basics. If you've ever wanted to join a world of wanderlusters like yourself, this guide is the perfect way to drop out, work less, and experience the world around you from a completely different perspective.

You can purchase the book in both print and kindle formats here:

If you do purchase the book from Amazon and can take the time to write an honest review, I'd sure appreciate it! I will be releasing a DRM-Free epub format of the ebook available for purchase here on StP as well. Thank you all for your support of StP, myself, and this book over the past two years of it's production! I'm very excited to finally have this project finished, and I'm looking forward to receiving your input, opinions and reviews! If you can tell your friends, family, or anyone you think might find this book useful, please do! I need all of your help in promoting this book to those who could use the information.

Of course, if anyone has any questions, comments, etc, feel free to post them in this thread and I'll address them as soon as I can. Thanks!
My paperback is on its way! Looking forward to reading this!

If you wanted to donate a few copies to NYC books throu bars that d be dope. I've being volunteering with them lately packing books and I believe this one would b well received among incarcerated folx.altho will not be allowed most likely in some jails.
Other then that, my first thought after reading the thread title was : what, anarchist and Amazon.com? How does that work together? But I guess if someone wants to build a capital then all winds, as they say. Its the humans right rite?

Got my copies on Tuesday, finished the one I kept for myself today, and the extra copies are going to be handed out this weekend, including one for the local library.

Very enjoyable read. I especially dug the "I don't think we're going to make it, dude" story that caught me right off the bat on the first page! No putting it down after that.

Nice work, Matt- I've always wished that I was disciplined enough to commit to putting all of my great stories into print and actually publish a book, so hat's off, and congratulations to you... Even if you were to only sell a single copy, it's a great accomplishment, and pretty inspiring.

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you liked it! I've sold about 50 copies so far, so I'm definitely feeling very accomplished!

Congrats on finishing the project! If anyone would like to buy and donate a copy to the hobo library at the Black Butte Center for Railroad Culture I'm sure it would be appreciated and seen by many travelers who otherwise might not get a chance. It could be sent to BBCRC, 800 Black Butte Road, Weed, CA 96094. We will also plan to add it to the online "hobo bibliography" maintained by BBCRC.

I recieved my copy this morning, ive already read it (speed reader) and will reread it a couple times over the next few weeks. You have done exceptionaly well @Matt Derrick. I very much enjoyed the book. I have a small suggestion tho, in order to further thank the members of STP that contributed to your book, how bout giving them donater status? Or life time supporter status?
That's a great idea, I will try to put that into action in the next few days.

Went to give you a positive review on amazon but they wont let me. Something about i need to spend $50 or more on amazon before i can write reviews. What a load of bullshit!!!
Huh, I didn't know they did that, but I guess it makes sense. If you can still leave a review someday I'd sure appreciate it!

Gladly! I will mail out a copy this week if I can. Where can we find this online hobo bibliography?

Possible to send cash somewhere for a copy?
Yes, you can send cash to:

Matt Derrick
Attn: book sale
1501 Twin Lakes Rd
Cle Elum, WA 98922

Keep in mind it might take an extra week or two after I receive payment for it to show at your door since I have to order prints from the printer in small batches.

Hey folks, I just wanted to drop a quick note in this thread to let you all know that I've sold 105 copies of this book so far! Thank you all so much for your help and support, I hope that everyone that bought a copy is enjoying it!

What I really need right now is folks to post some reviews of the book on it's amazon page, which you can find here:

http://bit.ly/anarchistguide

I need to get 25 reviews in order for my book to appear in some of the more relevant search results, and so far I only have four! :p

So if you've had a chance to read the book and feel confident about giving even just a one sentence review (longer is better) I would definitely appreciate it!

Bookgift17 as a coupon code makes it a ten dollar book today, or get it and a few other cheap Kindle books for similar. ;)

Also worth saying you don't have to have bought it through Amazon to leave a review there only need a amazon account

Donations go towards paying our monthly server fees, adding new features to the website, and occasionally putting a burrito in Matt's mouth.

Total amount
$40.00
Goal
$100.00

Monthly Goals

  1. Paying the Bills
    $40.00 of $50.00
The first $50 in donations go towards paying our monthly server fees and adding new features to the website. Once this goal is reached, we'll see about feeding Matt that burrito.
  2. Buy Matt a Beer
    $40.00 of $75.00
Now that we have the bills paid for this month, let's give Matt a hearty thank you by buying him a drink for all the hard work he's done for StP. Hopefully his will help keep him from going insane after a long day of squishing website bugs.
  3. Feed Matt a Burrito
    $40.00 of $100.00
Now that the bills are paid and Matt has a beer in his hand, how about showing him your love by rewarding all his hard work with a big fat burrito to put in his mouth. This will keep him alive while programming new features for the website.
  4. Finance the Shopping Cart
    $40.00 of $200.00
Now that the bills are paid and Matt is fed, perhaps it's time to start planning for those twilight years under the bridge... if only he had that golden shopping cart all the oogles are bragging about these days.
