The Alice packs are older and have an aluminum frame. The newer style Army rucks are the Molle or Molle2 they are great packs but the frames are kind of weak. I myself never broke one but some guys did. What guys are doing now is taking the old Alice frame and putting the Molle pack and straps on it. So you end up with a hybrid that is an awesome frame pack. It has tons of room and a dedicated bottom portion of the sleep system it will hold your bag and tent easy. You can load over 100lbs in it. Pretty cheap too at surplus stores. I will try to take some pics if you want.
reg alice pack with aluminum frame but add this makes it super comfortable. you are basically bringing the alice up to todays packs standards.http://www.specialforces.com/field-survival-gear/field-packs-gear/ruck-kidney-pad

they might have an older canvas alice. but i doubt you are going to find anything modernish in brown. most are green and khaki

Wait what? They come in khaki? I like brown over black because night is not colored black, it is actually more charcoal. I don't like green because you tend to stick out in the southwest. There is always brown to blend into. Just my 2c.

best thing i've had, and ended up getting again after trying other packs is the rubberized swiss engineers rucksack it's not too bulky and it rolls plus its waterproof and will hold everything you need if you're not a horder, pretty much bulletproof deal

considering a couple of packs, neither which I've seen mentioned anywhere around here:
http://www.harrysarmysurplus.net/medium-modular-assault-tactical-pack-2.html
and
http://www.harrysarmysurplus.net/3-days-assault-pack-2.html

Mainly for the durability, but also that the size and shape look decently comfortable. I like to pack light, but am very set about bringing sleeping gear, and maybe a heavy jacket. a few things which alone would double the load.
both internal frame/backing board I'm guessing. My main concern is whether, and how, I'd strap a sleepbag and small tent onto one.

Wondering if anybody has experience working with a similar arrangement.
