So I snatched up a "British 58" style pack last year from a military surplus. They said it came from the owner's personal collection.. First thing that interested me was the complete lack of zippers(I fucking hate zippers. I think that their place is on sleeping bags, and that's it). For a pack with no frame, it's surprisingly comfortable to me(last pack was a med Alice w/frame). Everything on the pack is either cotton, cotton webbing, or steel clips, buckle, eyelets, etc.
The "tick" portion is pretty large. Big enough to put more than a couple gallon jugs inside it. Two external side pockets on the "tick". There are helmet straps you can secure extra shit with, bed roll straps, a poncho roll(I keep my tarp in it), two kidney pouches, right hand pouch, left hand pouch, and mine came with an extra removable pouch.
One of the coolest features about it(that I just fucking discovered AFTER traveling last summer) is that you can remove the main compartment from the yoke, and just carry your yoke/utility belt around town while your heavy shit pouch is stashed in some bushes behind the Dollar General.
