Hey all, I'm Steve, from Vancouver Canada. I've been travelling on two years come this summer, starting from Scotland and am now here at the lowest point in Europe - Crete. I quit the army after five magical years to do this, and haven't regretted it one bit. It's become my life, and the more I travel the more it simply feels like home. Oddly enough most random towns, beaches, forests or wherever I end up fees more like home than where I grew up. Strange for me, as I only ever moved once in my life at age three, so my house of 23 years had always been what I knew as my home.

I travel by Hitchhiking, sleep outside or in abandoned buildings, and if I'm offered work for a room and food, I like to settle in spots for an undetermined amount of time. Currently I'm working at a rental apartment sorta place on the southern coast of crete, living out of a (renovated) 100 or so year old house.. (love old stuff I do).

I'm on my way East, probably as far as Kurdish Iraq before escaping back north as the death heat sets in. But when I'm stationary like this I love reading, conversing with other travellers (because I rarely meet them in person), and getting my Internet fix.

So I hope to be active for at least a little while before committing to the road once more :)

Welcome to our dysfunctional little family of Houseless Travelers. Everyone here is awesome and this is a great resource for travelers and other alternative livers.

Most of us felt the same way when we first started traveling. It's a freedom and an experience that most folks in the world will never realize, and for me at least, and probably others too, it really was the first big decision of my live that felt right. I hope that makes sense.

Again, welcome. I can't wait to hear some of your travel stories.

I've found Greek women hard to talk deeply with. I think I scare most away before that's possible, too ;) though in crete the alternative scenes seem bigger. I've met a fair amount of people people into Psychedelics, darker music, incense... Trippy stuff. But after so much time on the fringes of society socialising seems so foreign to me. I'm so used to sittin by a fire and talk in to my plastic duck companion.

And Thorne, I do believe I know exactly what you mean. It's a shame don't meet more people like yall in person.

Welcome! I'm actually on my way to Vancouver right now, just waiting for the ferry. I've been on Van Island for awhile now with the plans of heading south but after meeting all the great people from Germany, France, and Australia, they've convinced me to cross the sea, which I'll get around to writing about hopefully soon. Maybe I'll see you over there!

But then again, my plans seem to change daily so who knows where I'll end up.

I kinda miss Vancouver. Not the people, but the forests and the lakes. I'm looking forward to exploring the smaller Islands. I have heard some of them have some dry nice off grid communities as well as some hippyish areas, such as on saltspring.

Funny how I've lived in the area all my life and really have seen very little... It seems this is common though. People generally see more of other places than their own backyard!
