I really fucking hate america and all the shit that comes with it. So I want to go live in spain for a while. Pretty much taking a backpack and my guitar for uber cheap living. Hopefully i can busk and make some money playing americana songs.

Anywho, what im wondering is. Whats the best way to fucking get there for CHEAP?? I could book a flight 6 months in advance for like a 1,500 which seems like the cheapest I have found. I even looked into traveling by cargo ship but they want like 150 a night and it takes 15 nights to get there.... I might cannoe it.... Not really. But there has to be some better way.

around 2006 or so, i got two standby tickets through airtech.com for about 250 each way (nyc to amsterdam). it was incredibly easy, but i just checked the website now, and it looks like they don't really do this anymore, although you can sign up for a newsletter to be notified when they have tickets to amsterdam available. theoretically, from amsterdam you could take a reasonably priced train or hitch to spain.

i would also look at being a boat crew member. findacrew.net and other websites like that might be useful.

also, if you can find a cheap way into any part of europe, ryanair.com might be an alternative to get to spain for stupid cheap. it's a europe only airline for the most part, and their supposed to be really cheap. but they cut costs like crazy, charging for luggage and whatnot, and ive even heard rumors of them charging for using the toilet while on the plane. and if i remember correctly, their customer service sucks. but, they're really cheap.

if you end up getting out there, you should report back on how you did it, im sure a lot of us would like to know how it went.

I will for sure keep the board updated. There just has to be a cheap way... Thanks for the links tho. I read on here actually some girl was going to try and hitch sail boats across the atlantic. Hopping off at islands and such haha.

it's definitely possible, we just need people to report back on their attempts and give us some details :)

Ohh, airtech ~ I loved them back in the days of [quasi] stand-by flights; got a flight out to Honolulu for $150. It's sad that they don't do this sort of thing anymore; it was darn brilliant!

What websites are YOU lookin' at??! Icelandair, that's where you need to go... Granted, I don't believe they service Spain, but they do go to France, Germany, even Italy. Once you're into the EU (Schengen), you can travel all over. Found flights from JFK to Netherlands for $460 - not too bad. Cheapoair.com might be worth looking into, as well...

Also, thank you for spelling 'Amerika' the way it SHOULD be spelled.. I share your sentiments muchly, yo. As soon as you experience life in other countries, you realize how incredibly UN-'free' we truly are, unless freedom means unlimited access to shitty food, shitty television, and a corporate, capitalist consumer mindset of endless celebritatory drivel.

South of the border, [Mexico and Central America], it was perfectly all well and good to walk down the street with a beer - I was blown away the first time I saw bottle openers affixed to the counters of shops in Belize. :) Of course, alcohol consumption in public places isn't the ultimate determining factour in the level of a country's 'freedom,' but... it is a damn good indicator, I would say. I'd love to cruise around Europe for a bit, as well ~ my grandmother is from Italy, and I've always YEARNED to go there, see, feel, and experience the 'Motherland'...

Not to burst your bubble, but Spain (or anywhere Eurozone) would not be a place to live for cheap. Also, if jobs are your thing then you aren't getting one their either (double digit unemployment). What attracts you to Spain? Maybe central america or south america would be the way to go. Tickets are very cheap to Cancun or Colombia, and buses are dirt cheap. Everything is cheap down there, and the dollar is very strong when compared to their currencies.

BTW, Heathrow is the cheapest way to get to Europe. I would guess that you could find a one way for under $500. From there, budget airlines or rail are real cheap.

Maybe central america or south america would be the way to go.

agreed! everything here is very expensive in the eu cities, in a lot of tourist areas i keep hearing about buskers getting their instruments taken... it also seems theyre more annoyed by american/english tourists than anything. thinking going south would be a much better option
