So I’ve worked at a food bank for the past year, and have some insight as to how you can get a belly full of good food for a few hours of volunteering your time.

Most every small town has a food bank, and if you show up to help sort produce, stock shelves, sweep, or whatever needs to be done, you will be fed a nice healthy lunch that is made in their kitchen. We also provide fruit and snacks to volunteers plus there’s always PB&J/bread, and coffee/tea and other beverages available throughout the day. I’ve seen travelers and street folks get hired on as jobs open, and they make a name for themselves volunteering regularly.

Just putting it out there in case you ever find yourself hungry and have time to help others.

Good deal! Have a church down the street that feeds any one who comes there M-F 5:30-6:30 pm. I've steered travelers that I run into on my street (Monroe Ave seems to be a meet up place for travelers coming to rochester ny) to the church and also the church accepts volunteers for helping and also feeds them plus gives them extra food for their help. It's good to have these places.
