So as part of my North-South America bike tour, I'm gonna hit the slabs. Mostly excited about salvation mountain, but I'd like to stay a night or two there.

I have a tent, so that's taken care of,
But I thought it'd be nice if I'd have a connection, someone to say "heyyy" to,
Instead of just popping there.

visit the library and you will get the lay of the land and local community. you can probably hit up @Cornelius Vango and they will show you plenty of places you can camp.

Oh that's the dude that operates the library! I saw a video of him.
Thanks.

Obviously, I remembered not correctly. It's a she!

I thought I could just ride my bike in and pitch a tent anywhere? I guess I'll have to research the library then!

Also check out Rabbit side if youre doing a bike tour. You can find them on warmshowers... and get a safe spot to throw up a tent.
I sent them a message on WS,
No reply, and i don't want to just show up to their camp, it might be viewed as a rude thing (which I understand..).

Crazy hobo,
I think you can do whatever you want, this post is just me trying to reach out to someone before I go there, but if I don't get any response, I'll go anyway. It's only 180 miles from where I am, which is approx 3 days ride for me :)

you can, it's just helpful to get plugged into the community by visiting the library if that's something you want to do.

just out of curiosity, is 'rabbit side' a person or a place?

Three different people, their camp is called the rabbit side (according to their page on WS).
