Crossing Central American borders with dogs?

I am planning an expedition into the heart of Central America. I'd like to hitch from British Columbia to Costa Rica and back. Im wondering if anyones had any experience crossing over borders, on foot, with their dog? I understand the certification needed for the US border, but I hear it can be...

Hearing protection for dogs on trains?

I actually came across a website that makes doggy ear muffs specifically for the noise of airplane cockpits. http://www.safeandsoundpets.com/index.html $60 a pair seems a bit extreme though.. I reckon it cant be too difficult to make a pair myself.

Hearing protection for dogs on trains?

I'd like to take my dog hopping, but im worried the noise of cars clanking around would be detrimental to his hearing. Dogs obviously have hearing much more acute than our own, and even I still wear earplugs sometimes, so im wondering whether or not the noise would be a problem. Advice?

    Couple of DIY pack ideas

I tried a makeshift PVC frame once. It works well if you're just hitching from place to place, but it wont survive long if you're throwing it off trains.

    trouble with depression in winter

Im from Canada, and most people I know will end up getting Seasonal depression in the winters, due to cooping themselves up for months on end and never seeing the sun. I believe its a lack of Vitamin D that stimulates it. Breaking out of the depression is hard, but not impossible. Usually I just...

How yo get a dog when you have no address or money?

I adopted my dog, not from a shelter, but from a delightful woman who just couldn't handle him anymore. Prior to adopting him I visited endless shelters and spoke with many people online. Every person I spoke with was dying to give their dog to me, but i was really just searching for the right...

    Sailing Oceania

If you're truly determined, I dont see why not. Dont set a time limit though. Train until you feel overly confident with your skills, and then train a littlle more. I've met many people who've sailed the Pacific and only taken a basic 3 week sailing course. Anyone can do anything in any amount...

    River crossings

It really depends how big the crossing is. I will often cross once, leaving my pack behind, and tie a long rope tightly across from one side to the other. Clip the pack on with a carabiner and guide it along. If that doesn't work, I would suggest making a raft out of driftwood and other various...

A better stick n poke wick

Personally I use 3RLs and they work just fine for a nice precise line. Do you wrap yours? I've never wrapped anything but a sewing needle. I find the professional tattoo needles hold ink just fine. Depending on what your poking into yourself, I feel a 7RL would become too thick.

    Limo ride!!

Cant even count how many times I've seen a limo ride by and prayed silently for it to pull over. I bet it was all any of us ever could have imagined. Bottles of champage? Bags of blow? Thats real life... right?

    Papua New Guinea

I had an uncle that travelled extensively in Papua. He wasn't hopping, hitching, or none of that, but he was traveling around with a friend of his who'd been living in the country his whole life. His stories are rife with roadside machete hold ups, untrustworthy locals, and incredible natural...

    Asia trip. what language?

I just got back from a 3 month stint all over Asia, and can honestly say that English will carry you far. There are plenty of people that are fluent and in the major cities you will have no problems. Once you get to the smaller, off the road places, it will be a bit more difficult, but not...

    Hygiene

I haven't used soap for more than a full year now. Washing yourself with just water is a perfectly adequate way to stay clean. There seems to be this strange social stigma that comes along from the non use of soap, but I believe it's just plain old conditioning. Most folks have been taught to...

Damn near a year in the brush

On behalf of mushroom pickers everywhere, my sincerest apologies for the ignorance of those amateurs. Most of us pick specifically to get in the bush, and it blows me away that they could turn you in. I've done long stints away from civilization, but certainly not a year. What would you say was...

In New Zealand for a year

Bro, I've been traveling NZ for about 9 months now, and can get what you're saying. At first it appears a difficult egg to crack, but I promise it'll get easier as you head farther South. The problem here is that you decided to stop in Te Puke. Haha. As far as culture goes, you wanna rock on...

    Camping Stove Airline Issues?

Hey folks. Im headed out on a big trip across the ocean in a few days and was suddenly struck with the idea that I may or may not be able to bring my own stove along with me. Its just a simple single burner propane stove (no tank), but what I've been reading on the internet says that customs...

Would you rather hitch or live in a car?

I recently got back from a 16,000km road trip in my camper van across Northern Canada and Alaska for about 5 months, but prior to that I have hitched every trip that I've ever embarked on. Obviously both options have their pros and cons, but it really just gets down to what kind of trip you want...
