Hey there! I'm Bosco, I'm an out of work bartender, and I'm fucking sick of Ireland. I've been born and raised on this tiny country and since I finished up school, I've been in kind of a rut. It's just been easier to work and pay rent and not think about doing what I really want to do, which is see the world. However, this godforsaken pandemic has really let the cabin fever set in, and now more than ever, I need to get the fuck out. Its lovely to meet you all!
Once this thing sorts itself out and I can actually start moving, I have plans to get a Visa and spend some time out in the USA. Sure the politics are fucked and all, but the idea of a massive fucking country where I can just wander really appeals to me. If you've never been to ireland, you can basically get from one side to another within a day or so, so its hard not to feel trapped.
Alongside that, working in a nursing home, I work with old people who've been born in ireland and are currently dying in Ireland without ever leaving the country. Its honestly horrifying to imagine being that person. So here I am!

They have bars/bartenders in the nursing homes in Ireland? That’s where I’m going to die!

Welcome to StP, hope you can make over this way.

Not enough american travellers appreciate this; being able to travel for days without borders is great. And we have everything except rainforest here.

Where I live, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, is considered a temperate rain forest . While we are behind on rain now, our 30-year average is just over 50” per year. However, we frequently get years of 70-80 inches. In 1998, we had our second highest rainfall total since they started keeping records, over 100” that season. And all our rainfor the year comes between Oct-April.

I think the Irish know a bit about rain, though.

pleased to meet you! good luck with yr travel needs. Ireland sounds so small, yeah. usa is a lot to explore. the size is a nice aspect.
See, I've considered travelling Europe, but languages aren't really my speciality. I genuinely cannot wait to get out to the states, shame international travel is shut down in Ireland rn

Nah mate, you're talking about American Guinness. That muck is made miles away and transported to bars all over the place. I worked in this tourist bar in Dublin city centre, and the brewery was about 20 minutes walk away. Once you try a guinness that was brewed right next to you, I guarantee you'll change your mind

Yeah the rain here is absolutely disgusting. When I get travelling the first spot needs to be somewhere warm, I can't bear looking at any more of this bloody rain

Welcome! I visited Ireland in 2019 and went to Dublin and had a great time. I met some awesome people who put me up in their squats. If you come to the US this year and need a place to stay in Portland OR let me know.

Welcome! I'm Fawn. I love Ireland, traveled a few weeks around Dublin, Galway, and Northern Ireland/Antrim Coast. But yes, it is very small and I could definitely see how it could feel trapping. The US does have some beautiful wild spaces still, and I'm always struck by that after traveling in Europe.
If you make it out here, I'd be happy to host you for a few days or go on an adventure, or something. I live in MA now, but selling the house this year and plan to travel more. So no idea where I'll be. I really hope travdl restrictions open up this year, too. I'd like to get to Sweden for a few weeks.

gotta cosign this post. the one time i was in Europe the difference in the Guinness really got my attention. practically comparable to the much more excellent food quality over there

ironically i had the same experience with the (far superior) Budweiser in Brazil, then go figure I was told a lot of it is produced there nowadays

Anyway I got a couple questions for you bud, what other dark beers are produced in Ireland that might not get as much traction internationally?

Also, have you ever heard of boiling Guinness and drinking it warm?

Yeah it's a bit of a stereotype, but Irish people honestly are pretty friendly compared to a lot of the world. I've heard a ton of amazing things about portland, you might see me there sometime this year!

Oh Sweden is so beautiful, if you're ever back in Ireland you have to let me show you around Belfast, it's so beautiful and there's so much incredible history in there.

Awesome, I'd love to go back. Belfast was definitely my favorite over Dublin.. we were only there a couple days and barely touched on things to do. The locals we met were really fun and friendly.

Twenty years ago I worked for this small pub chain in the states where each pub was constructed from old Irish Pubs which had been “carefully deconstructed, shipped overseas, and reassembled”. They claimed to have genuine Irish Guinness on tap. A handful of employees were from Ireland and they said it was better than other American Guinness but still not quite like drinking it in Ireland. These places are so fucking bizarre, and according to my coworkers, doubly so for people from Ireland.

Check em out if you're ever here and find yourself bored and homesick.

Put some money away, get your visa and come visit the USA!

That is so insane!! It always weirds me out how new the USA is, for instance, the bar I worked in pre-pandemic was about 300 years old, passed down from father to son, and it wasn't really a big deal. The idea that someone would pop over to Ireland, tear a bar down, send it over to the states and build it back up again is so insane to me!

Much appreciated, I'm probably starting with a tourist visa and then try to find someone willing to take me on before my 90 days run out, so fingers crossed I manage it!
