@MFB Yeah i thought it was strange, being ripped on immediately, but such is the nature of forums i guess

Got a lot of respect for vegans, pagans, wiccans and anybody willing to explore fringe ideas and risk ridicule.

But a lot of the time, beliefs should probably be kept to oneself to avoid such encounters taking place, lesson learnt.

For LoA, it's a very tricky one, i've gone back and forth over it many times, but still come to the main problem of 'suffering without cause'. What causes one to suffer outside of their own direct ability to change the situation.

In a highly technical society, there will be no shadows.

Yeah i guess that's true, scary, but the true Orwellian subreailty. Trying to avoid that if i can.

I've got two main branches of thought concerning avoiding that future, and am trying to lean more into the harmonious one rather than the alternative. Still, the anarchist streak runs deep in me.

Cheers

@StarMage yea dood, sorry for the confusion, but I promise we werent ripping on you.
I think it was just how vague you were with "im into magic and stuff".
We're all into fringe ideas and have some good shit to say; and would love to exchange with you or anyone.
You are right about the nature of forums though.

@MFB Y

Beliefs should be shared so we can learn from one another. Sharing what you believe is also a good way to figure out who is an asshole and who isnt. :)

in regards to your statement about LOA; you are correct Sir. I believe suffering comes from attachment. Wanting a specific outcome. It's healthy to want things, but not to be attached to the idea of having these things. Because then we suffer when we lose them. Or dont get them
Look up Amor Fati by Freud.
The Stoics have a lot of good stuff on this too if you have never read up on them.

@MFB Yeah all good, i suppose by being ridiculed by those who do not understand the value of fringe subjects, find it easier to tear it down, but given what i have read here for many years, it would seem like this was not the place for such.

Being stuck inside now i thought it was a good chance to reach out and see what could come out of connecting rather than just reading and observing. Time will tell i suppose.

Yes i would consider myself somewhat familiar within the Stoic field, with Senaca's letters being my personal favourites. I haven't read them all, but they speak a universal truth that most readers can intuit.

Amor Fati.. Again very interesting topic, did Freud also have something to say on the matter?

Edited: Clarity, also, in term of 'magic', i am just getting into Druidism and the study of liminal space, druidism i found challenging to discuss online. I attempted to join the dedicated forum, but there seemed to be much discord over where the 'true' druid texts lay and had an almost religious fervour about them. So for now i'll stick to my readings on that.

Seneca is great. Epictetus too.
Meditations by Marcus Aurelious is another one I loved.

*Amor Fati = Nietzche. Sorry. But also traced back to the stoics. Too much philosophy floating around in this drug ravaged brain of mine.
But....
Speaking of Freud and the Stoics and connecting them;
Its funny how when Freud told us we all wanted to fuck our mothers it was considered controversial. In reality, it was actually old news, as the Greeks figured out that gem 2,000 years prior with the idea of Oedipus. Our social rigidities of present times, ey?

Ever get into Eastern philosophies?
Reading the Dao was game changer for me when I was young.

@MFB Yes i also enjoy the writings of Epictetus. I found Meditations a challenging read for some reason, it took me a while to get through it.

Looking at it from a historical point of view, it's revealing to discover how in times of societal decline, especially from empire, branches of Stoicism start making appearances and reappearances.

If i didn't have my own such ravaged brain (you can check all the edits for proof!) i would be looking into creating a document that would detail in a 'Sapiens' fashion, how great changes in human history lead directly to the philosophies of their time, then map it out on a timeline and show the reemergences, conflicts, deaths and hibernations as a Jungian collective consciousness in action. I really need to learn to focus though.

Yes, the ancients were a lot more sexually liberal than our current times, just walk around a few temples in Malaysia and Singapore and notice what the carvings are doing!

Yes, my interest in the Eastern Tradition took me out to Asia until very recently. I was actually planning to study at a centre out there, but got sidetracked by current affairs.

The Tao may very well be the key to everything, i made a good friend who lives in Thailand, ex-military, who had dedicated his life to following the Tao, in a very sincere way.

I told you we weren't idiots! On that I will say; it's important for us to be able to be playful, silly and childish. It a sign of intelligence. Kids got it figured out in regards to doing without doing.
I suck at typing too. :)

You're a sharp dood,
I liked your idea on a philosophical time line. Do it! I've always liked the idea of a celestial wikipedia, so we could have the answers to all those big questions we waste time bickering over.

it was nice to chat with ya! Gotta get moving, but I hope to have a few exchanges in the future.
I just spent some time in Thailand and Laos, until like yourself was sidetracked due to current affairs. So we should chat about that. We should also chat about how dope the Incas, aztecs, and mayans were.

Later, Tator.

Didn't really expect the vegan hate

Edited: For clarity

The world can be a really tough place, if you have thin skin.I think I recall Steve Martin saying something to the effect: There’s always a victim in comedy.

No vegan hate here. It’s just that you guys are so easy to poke fun at, always wearing your “ vegan-ness ” on your sleeves, never passing up a chance to proselytize or attempt to shame meat-eaters.

I will say this: Many , if not most of the companies catering to vegetarians/vegans seem to keep on retainer, an army of food -scientists, forever trying to make stuff that tastes “just like meat”.

But I’ve yet to find a rancher trying to breed a beef cow that tastes like a soybean. You know it tastes sooooo good.

@Faceplant I hear you brother.
I always liked the joke....
How do you know when someone is a vegan?
They tell you before they tell you thier name.
People need to flaunt ideologies bc it makes them feel important. Travellers do it too, everyone does.

I'm mostly vegan because of MY morality. Im a hippydip and believe all living things are connected, and I dont want anything to die to satiate me. But I dont give a shit if others eat meat, because that's nature. Thats why when you take a bite of a juicy steak you brain sends all these lovely neurotransmitters that reward you for doing so. In the end, I got better shit to talk about than my diet.

I never understood the products that try and mimick meat. It always taste wierd and fake.
Besides, it's not hard to make veggies taste delicious.
I do like veggie dog and burgers, not bc the products themselves, but bc they are the vehicles for the condiments which I love, L, T, O, mustard, relish, etc.
Beyond has good products too.

The Tao is a really interesting concept, and I am genuinely interested in what you have to say about it - how would you verify your friend was following it in a very sincere way?

it was nice to chat with ya!

@MFB Yes and you also, that was a pleasant exchange, lots of interesting topics to be hashed out around the virtual campfire. Happy to discuss further any of those subjects you mentioned, and more!

Playfulness appears to be key ingredient to life, i can fall short of this aspect often. When ancient sages become your sponsor and forgotten papyrus becomes your drinking buddy, you can lose perspective sometimes.

@roughdraft i believe the distinction was made bc sadly, it needs to be. To most people belief systems are a fad, something to wear to look good.

I like the idea of religion being art, whereas we should all make our own based on what works for us individually . Ive never been as much interested in what someone believes, but more in how what some believes affects their actions.

@StarMage i just got the word 'sage' tattooed on my index finger to remind me who I want to be when I grow up.

Onto Dao de jing?
To me its an important reminder to be flexible, that I belong everywhere and anywhere, that we are all many things at once but still all connected, that we lead by action, and follow out of love. I could go on and on.

Who else?

agreed, hoping for more details from this particular anecdote @StarMage cited

A quick vignette on being eternal young;

Theres this jeezuz freak that walks back and forth from CO Springs to manitou. Springs with a string of wagons coupled together with a bunch of "love is the answer" signs on them. Thats all he does.

I had never met him but really wanted to.
I was having a glass of wine on a patio and saw him. Bounced up and ran across the street to him, told him I liked what he was doing, chatted a bit, and gave him some weed.

As I was leaving he got real serious, poked me in the chest harder than i liked and in a gravelly old man voice said
"boy, i need to tell you something.
That little boy that just ran across the street to be nice to an old man.
Theres a man inside of him right now, and he's rigid and judgemental and he's trying to take over. Dont ever let him take over, dont let him replace the lil boy inside of you"

I was 36ish when this happened, but I loved the sentiment that he was conveying.

The Tao appears to me to be the most complete system for energetic transformation that there is. For people who are very systematic in their approach, following certain Taoist schools may be the most beneficial, but it depends on the individual of course.

There is also the more general Tao, or Dao, which we know to be the poetic understandings of Natural happening and effortless force. It often get's confused with Zen for this reason, as well as the rather cryptic prose.

I believe in my friends sincerity, because of his humility, temperament and also life circumstance. The same way anybody verifies that someone is of trustworthy character and has good intentions.

He has moved permanently to Thailand and left the military to be close to his Teacher and training school and i feel honoured to have met him, it was a chance encounter, but he later went out of his way to spend 2 hours over lunch discussing Taoism with me, as he practices it. He is a very private person, so i recognise the value of someone like that sharing their belief and practises with another.
