Any second now, CDC is going to issue guidance that all Americans, or maybe all Americans in some states (fighting over which to say is why it isn't hasn't been issued yet), should wear face masks when out and about.

There are a bunch of these going around, this is the best one in my opinion, because the pleats make it fit more snugly around your face, which is key.

If there are no nearby longhairs to get hair-ties from, use cut up slices of pantyhose or tight socks (which also make good hair-ties), or loops of string that you tie on the back of your head instead of looping around your ears.

While this will work (kinda) cloth face masks work very minimally. The fact that there is no seal to your face, and they are made out of porous absorbent material will allow for your breaths water vapor to escape, and for others' to seep through onto your face.

My advice would be to snatch up a N95 or higher dust mask, and keep a clean shaven face if you want it to be effective.

(Getting this from a respirator training)

But this is good info, something is better than nothing, especially when it comes to you spreading the disease around.

Yes to most of that, especially "something is better than nothing".

If you're trying to keep out asbestos or sheetrock dust or other particulate matter, improvised masks won't work that well, but for respiratory viral disease (like COVID-19), there is some evidence that they prevent infection, and no evidence that they don't prevent infection. We don't know yet about this virus. But to me this is a case of "better safe than sorry".

Bear in mind that many who are infected never show any symptoms, and people that do show symptoms typically do so around 2 weeks after exposure, 2 weeks that they've been infecting everyone they are in close contact with. So lots (people reading this) are infected and don't know it. And there is tons of evidence that they prevent infecting others.

The N95s, and the almost equally-effective industrial KN95s, are hard to come by,. Most here have a bandanna. Me and my family have no N95s, but we've been using these masks on our trips out of the house.

Plus you can do crimes when the general breakdown of society arrives.

Thanks for posting this.
I actually though dust masks were useless when it came to infectious diseases, and I'm thinking of making a cloth mask myself.
One person was stating that it could be made from t-shirt material, folded over - with a single piece of paper towel in between the t-shirt material outer and inner layers.

This is getting too serious to ignore now.
Way too serious...........

Dust masks are probably better than anything improvised. Anything improvised is probably better than nothing.

Hospitals are using whatever the fuck they can get their hands on at this point in NYC. Nurses have been working in garbage bags and Yankees giveaway ponchos.

Ya, agreed. Just wanted to quell the notion that, if you just cover your face you are good. Many people think that, unfortunately. But again, something is better than nothing.

Let me also throw out there that if you have any access to disinfecting, or really any, soap at all, remember to wash that mask (improvised, not dust), because the more you breathe in and out, the more bacteria and the like are building up in that material.

Let me also stress, DO NOT clean that shit with bleach, peroxide, or any other chemical that can harm you if inhaled. The shit that kills this virus can also really fuck you up.

I think that the main thing people have to worry about, as you said, is that they may be carriers and show no symptoms. This is all about trying to prevent increased infections due to spreading It to others. I can almost guarantee that most people have already been exposed.

Hence most information being about 2 weeks behind the actual infection rate, and essentially, trying to 'flatten' the curve.

As i predicted yesterday, CDC has now issued guidance that all Americans should wear a non-medical face-mask in public.

Trump immediately said he woudn't do so.
