So i'm heading to Cali. What I'm packing for my adventure:
Alice pack
1 pair cut off shorts
1 pair jeans
1 pair cargo
1 tank top
1 tee shirt
1 hoodie
1 navy rain coat
Lantern (battery powered)
Double A batteries
Sleeping bag
Zippo
Zippo fluid
Gloves
Ear buds
Phone and charger
Sketch book
Sketching pencil set
My hygiene kit (hair and teeth care)
Poncho
Canteen
Flashlight
Pan
Black sharpie
Multi tool
Sewing kit
Plastic bags
Toilet paper
Sunglasses
Book
So that's all I've packed, but by freight how should I go if I'm leaving from Louisville, Ky? Also am I missing any vital pieces to my pack?

What kind of gloves? I always wear leather work gloves when in yards climbing on trains. I also have waterproof/insulated ski type gloves for when its cold. Sometimes just thin glove liners under the work gloves, if the weather is nice.

Ok then i confirm all of my winter gear suggestions. Earplug packs, bottles of water can usually be found on the ground near/in crew shacks. Most have heat/ac & electrical outlets to charge devices. Risky but i use them often.

I backpack/hitch hike, and I'm down to only 2 pairs of pants and 2 long-sleeved cotton shirts (you can always roll the sleeves up if you get too warm). I've never hopped freight, but I personally would prefer to not fill my pack with bulky clothing that's unnecessary. I DO have a few warmer things like a jacket, sweatshirt, etc. that ARE a little bulky, but I see then as necessary.

find two shopping carts and cut the child safety belts off. then you can cut the two straps that keep the flap secured atop your pack and sew on the lap belts in their place. this will make it way fucking easier to get into/close your pack.

I didn't really do the best job of explaining that but I hope you get the point.

Use the search feature. And ditch the cotton garbs and get some wool. And a space blanket, they weigh nothing and can keep you from freezing to death.

Also, different people have different needs (greatly affected by location/time of year), get out there and have some fucking fun, you'll figure it out. or maybe not, maybe you'll die. either way, I wish you the best of luck and if you head west from Louisville and find yourself in Paducah (like 4 hours west of Louisville) within the next month, I'll drink a beer and smoke you a doobie and show you the strap trick in person.
