Slightly irrelevant to your story, but I find Merrill's hold up well, especially with ballast et cet.

Merrels with the vibram sole can take a beating for a few months but they still fall apart fast. I'm on my third pair for the year.

This is a great story of adventure! I like reading about how folks do things differently than one would imagine a traditional hobo would. I've yet to hop a train, for various reasons. Though if I think back to the first time I dreamt of doing it. I didn't have a smart phone. It seemed almost impossible. Now my same friend and I that had that same dream almost 20 years ago have been doing some serious planning for our first ride.

I'm inbetween trying to figure out how I'm going to get to Portland from Austin. Then we're going to try and head to Seattle from there. I plan to hop/hitch as much as possible.
