ya i just got back here. helping take care of my dad for a bit. hoping to get out of here as as i can...
i was raised in florida, but left as soon as i could. the old florida my dad used to know was pretty damn cool. but that's been gone for ages now. not even the remnants left i knew as a kid.
thanks for the responses though, appreciated.

i would love to end up at a uni in northern cali, but don't know if i can pull that together. southern california just makes me think of a drier, more crowded florida :)

I'm flying out to Tampa, Fl next week to meet up with a friend and get a boat. I'm probably going to arrive a few days to a week before he does, so I was wondering if there is anything interesting to do there, and if there's any good spots to pitch a tent for a few days. If you're in the area, hit me up.

I heard St Pete used to be cool, but is kinda dead now. Is this still true?

I'm bringing a tent, and I was going to just head off into whatever forests I could find and pitch it. Is there any good spots I should know, or a direction I should go? What about camping on one of the St Pete beaches?

Well, we're looking at getting a sailboat, somewhere between 27-30 feet long, something that sleeps 4-5 comfortably. we've seen a couple of hunter brand boats that were pretty awesome, and most we've seen that are in the water and are ready to go are generally under 3,000 bucks. the plan is to spend about 6 months learning to sail, then head out and float around the keys and bahamas for a few months.

I see this post was old but, seeing as I've spent too much time in stpete, I'll say good luck on camping spots in st. pete. But you can ask any dirty kids around williams park, and find a spot for the night. they're all congealed with urine, and most everywhere is taken already. There are some tiny spots near the airport, few and far between. Woods don't last long here, and the few standing are basically water retention areas during most of the year.

If I remember right ybor is like downtown Tampa and the Westside is better.there really isnt good beach sleeping.but I always thought Florida was an easy place to find camping spots...palm tree forrests are the best.cover on top and nice and open underneath.not to mention a dry palm is a great firestarter

I know this post is old, but here's my two cents worth...

I live 11/2 hours from Tampa and avoid it and St. Pete both, like the plague.

Too much traffic, too many people...

But I know there are lots of Bohemian type things that go on in the Land O'Lakes area and I'm having a one day event, later in the year.

If you can subscribe online to a paper called, "Creative Loafing," while it's for the culture snobs (that's my opinion) every once in a while, something fringe makes it in.
