I never did anything like this. I always wanted to. Can anybody tell how to go about it? I live in gloucester county, new jersey. I want to go south.

Your post is vague. How do you want to go? Train, hitchhike or car?

Well there's a guide for new trainhoppers on this site if you use the search feature, as well as a lot of other information/advice/location info. Although, this is an unsecure place to post in-depth info on trains so most of the details are left out for obvious reasons.

Hitching is pretty easy, find a decent onramp that you can take the bus/walk/get a ride from a friend to, make a sign for where you're going and stand there lookin' harmless. There's different things you can do but that's basically the way it goes.

My hitching experience is from the west coast which is pretty chill in most places so maybe there's more things to consider in places where it's not so common or accepted.

hitchhiking isnt common around here. ive heard its frowned upon in jersey. there is very few railroad tracks around here. and when you do see a train its usually tankers.

I would suggest that you read the other forums on the right things to pack. I learned the hard way years ago and took too much shit. Dress in layers. STAY WARM! frost bite hurts. When I started, I got a ride to a truck stop on the edge of town and started talking to truck drivers. I've also sat on on ramps with my thumb out or a sign. I always got way more rides when it was cold and the holiday season. Some people do their one good deed of the year around that time. Just remember, you can do anything by sheer willpower....I've been around this country a few times because nobody told me it was hard or impossible.haha. good luck.

oh yeah....watch out for Texas, I think the devil lives there.

thank you for the advice. im going to be leaving at the end of the month hopefully. if everything goes right. i dont plan on going to texas. i dont want to see dubya.

hmmm...whatever anyone tells you, bring a (LIGHT WEIGHT) sleeping bag. I spent my first couple months out there with nothing but a hooded sweat shirt in winter. Ive never been so cold in my life. Oh, and check out army surplus stores and get yourself a nice alice pack. get a medium one though. the bigger your pack the more your gonna want to haul...wich is bad. Stick to nesessities and dont bother with a bunch of clothes. you can get clothes anywhere for free. Oh, and food and water...very important. lots of water and lightweight food. chicken boulion is great. and if you have the room, a small pot is very nice.

If your a guy, you should be fine, but carry a knife.
If your a girl, you (can) go on your own but i dont advise it.
