Well there's a guide for new trainhoppers on this site if you use the search feature, as well as a lot of other information/advice/location info. Although, this is an unsecure place to post in-depth info on trains so most of the details are left out for obvious reasons.
Hitching is pretty easy, find a decent onramp that you can take the bus/walk/get a ride from a friend to, make a sign for where you're going and stand there lookin' harmless. There's different things you can do but that's basically the way it goes.
My hitching experience is from the west coast which is pretty chill in most places so maybe there's more things to consider in places where it's not so common or accepted.
