Do real people ever actually use that expression? I've heard it in White corporate messages, but I'm not sure I've ever heard it from a real person, much less a Maori. The whole Maori language thing here is super cringey. Maori are cool, but this bizarre obsession with their culture isn't. It really borders on cultural appropriation when yuppies clumsily toss around the indigenous culture more than the people themselves. Virtue signaling and appropriation. They might have a few "vibrant" middle aged female cultural studies "house Maoris", but the real Maori culture is something I suspect these yuppies wouldn't find quite so palatable. Particularly as it conflicts with the cultural displacement of Maoris with... Punjabis. Like really give these people a break and stop importing a bunch of economic migrants from India et al. who disrespect and displace them, and for that matter integrate with the local culture about as well as oil with water.

Anyway, I'm looking for work or a good community around South Island if anyone has a lead.

Christchurch is full of abandoned buildings. Check out this extra grody dive:

First of all, you've got fuck all clue about what happens in New Zealand. Assuming that you're Australian from what your profile says, i think there's a simple reason for why you think the Maori language thing is cringey. Your country just eradicates Aboriginal culture. Relegates them to the middle of deserts and only drags them out when your yuppies wanna feel bad or your racists need someone to blame for cutting the welfare state.
So, yeah, fuck you. Perhaps when you go to another country leave your pre-conceptions at the door and see it with fresh eyes. If you did, you'd realize you don't know the history of our country or anything about it.
It's not so much that we have a obsession with Maori culture rather than we have genuinely attempted to create a culture that doesn't just pride Anglo shit.
We do say kia ora, we talk about our whanau, we go out for kai and we pat our puku's when we're done. Not all of us know the language, but theres alot of maori that do and even more Pakeha that are learning. Not for any virtue signalling bullshit, but because Maori culture is New Zealand culture. I was brought up learning all about it, fuck if i'm gonna let some dipshit aussie tell me what parts of my culture i'm ALLOWED to like.
Cultural appropriation discourse is just thinly veiled racism. When you tell a person that they can't learn about other cultures, enjoy what they find and incorporate that into their own life, you are just promoting cultural segregation. Getting to know how people live and taking a genuine interest in it is the first step toward empathy. But that's something that you never cared to understand is it? Mouthing off about house maoris and "real maori culture" as if you even know what the fuck that is.
And beyond that, wtf are you talking about with 'punjabi's"? who even calls Indians that? How would you know who's displacing who? If anything it's rich landowners displacing people rather than the powerless new immigrants trying to make it in this country.

I clicked into this wantingto help out anyone new in town, you don't deserve anyones help.

Sqwuak, sqwuak, sqwuak, goes the malignantly named troll kiwi. Your country is nearly as bad as your attitude, "eviscerate". I would advise people to skip New Zealand unless you know you really like it's natural assets.

There's something off about the people and society here. Maybe it's a combination of "short poppy syndrome" and numbing socialism? Maybe it's the deforestation, drug addicted youth? I don't know, but it's pretty far from the top of the best places to live (as is sometimes touted in online rankings) in my opinion. I've seen similar sentiments expressed by others online as well, which perhaps should have been taken into greater consideration.

What a extremely xenophobic thing of you to say. Please, give me a reason to just ban yer account so other people don't have to deal with yer bullshit. @Jack in the Green has been issued a warning for using hate speech. Seriously, if that's how you feel just fuck off. This website isn't going to tolerate yer ignorance.

Kia Ora! Welcome to New Zealand! I wouldn't say we have an obsession with Maori Culture. Its just something we as a nation want to preserve. Although I can understand how it may come across as bizarre.

Not sure what sort of work is down South over winter except Ski resorts and hospitality based jobs. There may be tree/vine pruning jobs up around Blenheim, Nelson and Motueka in the vineyards and orchards.

Good Luck and Safe Travels!
