This morning I woke up so angry for no reason other than being a little cold and flipped out destroyed most of my gear. I dealt with anger on and off for awhile. I used to just smoke alot of weed to deal with it. Now I'm finding myself without for the first time in a long time and start focusing on negativity. Any tips to overcome anger/depression on the road?

I noticed you are living in Hawaii so if I'm off the mark please forgive I've never been... but I'm assuming it's possible to regularly cut a beautiful wild flower regularly without messing with anyone's gardens.

I had a boss at a bar a while back who had me keep any leftover flowers from weddings and other events, add a vase or change the water, and put them on the main bar. His theory was that nobody would get rowdy around flowers.

I suppose you could test it by finding an old bottle or can, cut one flower, add an inch of water, and place it so you see it when you first wake up.

It's not about the flowers but grounding. Give yourself something to focus on to bring you out of your emotions and into the physical reality. Smelling lavender and oranges is calming.

If your anger isn't too quick to manifest you can even ask yourself - it's really important to speak self-actualizations out loud - why I getting angry? Why do I want to destroy my gear? for example.

Thank you for the kind advice. Unfortunately I left Hawaii earlier this year after losing both of my jobs to COVID. I should probably update that...

Sounds whacky but sometimes a good primal scream, just to let it all out, works wonders. But it’s best to do when you know that you are alone and won’t be overheard.

as someone who experiences a lot of self-critical / depressive altered states, a word I have found to be really helpful is “unpleaseable.” like there are sometimes hours, days, or weeks where it doesn’t matter what I do because I will find something wrong with it. once I recognize I’m in an unpleaseable state, I can just go on autopilot. I stop asking want I would want, or enjoy. I stop asking what would make me feel better. I just do the next thing knowing it won’t change shit. I try to physically exert myself as much as I can to tire my brain out, and I keep crossword puzzles around so I have something to solve that isn’t my own unsolveable problems.

i find with enough physical exertion i dont get angry so much. i love people but little things like too much clutter around the shop or dialing through 15million options to get to the social worker at the foodstamps office will drive me so far up the wall ill have to drink a case of beer about it just to cool down, n so i don’t go snapping on people cluttering up the isleway at grocery stores yk.

imhe i need either A. strenuous physical work or B. lots of alcohol (or C. a gym membership and somewhere quiet to meditate / fish / be creative

Since my last post, I read Seneca's On Anger.

My big takeaway is that anger is the one emotion we feel without external stimuli but in anticipation of whatever external force we pick. For example, I'd get angry at someone because they MIGHT hurt me, but if they actually hurt me I'd feel any other emotion EXCEPT anger.

Glad I re-read my flower advice that's good shit. Good luck everyone!

cumulative stress over how to afford food + mosquitoes is a good recipe for anger

my advice is to funnel that pentup stress/energy elsewhere before its out of the box. i throw mine into hard work

I recommend rubbing your calves, then your shoulders, then your stomach, for ten minutes twice a day for tension. This should relax your liver, which may be under pressure.
As for depression, they say one exposure to psilocybin every 3 years is great for depression, but also you could try eating pot, or nutmeg, or smoking tobacco, and then drinking a plain sweet soda, once every day or two over time.

I don't feel like I've been on the road enough to say specifically how to deal with anger that comes from that.
but a counselor once told me that when I feel myself getting lost in anger about stuff in the past, I should focus on my senses. He suggested feel a nearby surface and think about how it feels, take a deep breath in and think about any scents you might smell, think about what you hear, think about what you see in front of you, etc. The idea is to get your mind in the present moment. Hope that helps anybody reading this in some way.

I will remember that. Glad I didn't have to pay for that. Good advice.

screaming, moving my body, trying to stimulate my body with something cold, punching my backpack, eating chili (i try to always carry a small bag with spices for that), i also have a small hair clip that I put on my nose or earlobe for pain stimuli
and then i take some time to get along and try to figure out what i need / what the next steps are.
