Big Island

here's the deal: i did the whole hitch hiking/trains/sleeping in lots of bushes and abandoned buildings and stairwells things on the mainland for a year, and it totally kicked ass, and then i finally got a job (lame) and spent my first paycheck on a ticket to hawaii because that's the only place i couldn't hitch to. i'm taking my bike and a tent and don't have any plans besides biking around the entire island in 2 1/2 weeks. i'll be on the big island the whole time, so if you're on oahu like everyone else i know... i hope you're having fun but i won't see you. but if you're gonna be on the big island, or if you've been there, and have any advice at all... email me or call me: fore fore oh nine three five fore three six ate. things i want to do in hawaii: eat fresh fruit, ride my bike around the entire island, find dumpsters with food in them, get sand in my crack. if you have a skateboard i would probably want to hang out with you.:zombie:

are there any farmers markets/beaches/tattoo shops/punk or metal or hip hop or otherwise interesting shows/punk rock jungle shacks/squats i should visit?

you can glean a little info from that.
you'll find some stuff going on there, theres a few punk bands and a bit of activism, but i dont remember names or places really.

Flying into Hilo on the 23rd of January. I know the fishing line trick with sleeping on the beach. Any other tips/ advice? I'm looking to backpack but I'm basically broke so I can't really spend much on permits. What aboot food? A lot of fruit and stuff I just don't want to wander onto some pissed off farmer's property. Any info you have on this place is welcome.

some avocado trees, guava, some common mango. not much wild fruit in the winter season.....more so in the summer. Hilo farmer's market on Wednesdays and Saturdays is a good place to busk or maybe get some leftover fruit/food after they close. You might have luck meeting hippy commune type people in puna district - try hanging outside the health foods/natural market store in Pahoa town or go to the clothing optional Kehena Beach (on Sundays I think) where they have drum circles to connect with people.
Hawaii is really not the best place to come with no money. Hope you at least have enough for a plane ticket back or someone on the mainland that can help you out. You can always collect cans to recycle for money or try "white boxing" the tourists in Kona for their leftovers. Or learn how to fish lol good luck and keep your spirits up. Hope you have good rain gear/protection.
Wailuku stream, in downton Hilo, is a good place to wash up - very nice pools there and you might find a good place to camp if you bring some kind of BUG NET/TENT. In Kona, I used to camp along the beach out by the old abandoned airstrip. A little bit of a walk but no one ever bothered me out there. good luck
