The beggars around Marble Arch and Park Lane are getting around the law to stay in the UK
Current laws give migrants 90 days to get a job and a home otherwise they have to leave. But officials claim the Roma gypsies living rough around Park Lane are shamelessly slipping out of the UK a day before the deadline then returning 24 hours later so they can go back to their lucrative begging for another three months.
Frustrated councillors are writing to Home Secretary Theresa May to urge her to find a way of plugging the legal hole.
Westminster councillor Nickie Aiken said: “We’re finding the people living at Marble Arch and Park Lane are very wise to this. What they do is go to France or Belgium on the 89th day and on what would be the 91st day they come back so the clock starts ticking down from 90 once again.
Councillor Nickie Aiken
“The Home Secretary has to work with her counterparts across Europe to change this.”
Ms Aiken said the gypsy encampment was not only a health hazard but also seriously affected London’s tourism industry.
Some claim to make £100-a-day pestering people on Oxford Street. That is five times the monthly handouts they get in Romania.
