backpacking guitar and fiddle?

anyone have any opinions on which ones are best for sound, best for traveling? im thinking in particular of the Martin and Gibson.

also, any suggestions on cheap fiddles?

depends on what kind of traveling your talking about...I wouldn't spend more than a $100 on a guitar I was going to hitch with. I have a Samsick Silvertone elec/acoustic that I paid $70 for has low action and easy to play and sounds decent through my little 9vlt amp... and its red!

If your driving around in your Grandmas stolen Impala and don't have to worry about it getting tossed around like an ugly hooker then by all means get a Gibson

good points. i once had a fiddle for a short time. was only able to get John Henry down, but it didn't seem over the top difficult if i stuck with simple old timey songs.
