    Vancouver Island/Gulf Islands

Hey folks! I currently live in Vancouver and I've got a week off of work coming up next month and I wanna get away from this city for a while. I've thought of going to Victoria to check it out, or one of the gulf islands. Just throwing this out there to get some ideas. What I would really like...

    Staying safe?

1: get a can of bear spray. even the most agro & vile of skid's will not step to bear spray pointed at them. 2: when stuck in a city, if you don't want to hike to the outskirts, look for an accessible rooftop. there's always one to be found. sleep up there at night and stash your bag there in...

alone in the west, part I: assuming the worst

i've kept a journal of everything in life ever since i dropped out of college and decided to start hitching and hopping trains, but for whatever reason, last summer & fall i became lazy and didn't write anything, so today i set out to fill the gaps from memory but got tired of writing by hand...

First time canada, where to fly to, what to see.

the west is the best, in my opinion! vancouver in many ways is the crown jewel of the country...in some ways it's also the national problem-child. but it's naturally beautiful and there are great wilderness hikes within an hours drive of the city. from there you could tour out to tofino on...

Do you think it even matters if you're high?

i find it depends on the time and place you're at in life. sometimes drugs make my life better, sometimes they get in the way. sometimes sobriety feels awesome. the problem with some drugs is it's easy to become convinced that they are working for you rather than the other way around.

    Good knife vs multi-tool

thanks for the replies guys i really like the idea of having a set of pliers that can clip through wire and chain link fences, that alone has me leaning towards the multitool. plus the almighty can-opener. i'll check out the selection at home depot for sure. i've mostly scoped out multitools...

Share your wilderness camp pics, won't you?

this was the first shelter i built. super basic, as you can see. just a simple a-frame and a few tarps. lots of wild herbs around for tea and trout & whitefish in the river. i guess it wouldn't be liveable for an extended period of time but it was a perfect getaway

    Good knife vs multi-tool

so i've got a nice fixed-blade gerber knife that i've travelled with for a long time, but i left it in alberta and now i'm in the east gearing up to hit the road. needless to say a big solid knife has been very good to me, i use it for everything from gutting fish to spreading peanut butter on...

    Anyone use tinder?

anyone here ever meet somebody through tinder? i downloaded it for fun, got a few matches but don't really know what to say to anyone. it's kinda a shallow concept i guess, liking/rejecting based on facebook photos, but i'd imagine it could be a handy tool to have when in a new town.

    Canadian Hitchhiking Laws

damn, i never realized it's so illegal in canada! i've hitched a bunch in almost every province an never caught a fine. got stopped by the cops walking along the trans-canada in new brunswick once and i straight up told the cop i was headed to an on-ramp to hitch and he let me carry on, but not...

    Worst Hicthing ever

damn, these stories make me appreciate the luck i've had. i've only hitched in canada and from what i've heard it seems easier to catch rides here. once i was on a train that got ditched in thunder bay, slept under a bridge and had to walk for a couple hours to get to the highway the next day...

    van island

i've always had a good time travelling on the island in the summer, but how common is it to see travellers there in the winter? i've always thought that with some decent rain gear it could be possible to travel/camp there year-round. i know it does get pretty cold, but not quite cold enough to...

Bad Experiences with Rides while Hitching?

a cp worker in a beater plymouth took me from merritt to kelowna (b.c.), he was drinking rum in a coke bottle, going 120-130km/hr, swerving, passing everyone, couldn't believe we didn't get pulled over. he told me that calgary has way better crack & blow than vancouver (i didn't ask). he dropped...
