Photos New Zealand South Island; Fruit Tramping, Gold Mining and more

There is a thread back here somewhere about me being on the North Island in 2015. It was pretty lukewarm. I biked past a lot of farms and orchards and neverending fencelines, then got a job picking kiwifruit with a buncha people I never warmed up to much, stayed three months pining away for wild...

    Lesson to oneself

Piss in the bladder can slightly lower your body temp, since it requires more energy to keep it up to body twmp, or something like that. Using your pissbottle as a heater though, not too bad an idea. When I used to spend more time on a bicycle, in remote desert backroads and such, I'd ration...

How many of you are traveling with warrants?

Reviving this thread for a minute since this might be useful searchable info. Last year I applied for and received a working holiday visa from New Zealand. After three months on the North Island, I came back to the USA for the summer and spent most of it having a pretty sweet time riding trains...

    Staying safe?

Be willing to walk real far to find a good sleeping spot. Try to get beyond the usual bum range. If you are just passing put for a night and moving on, forested parks, rivers ect through nice neigborhoods can work, not much drama there, since cops get called if anyone sees ya :P On weekends...

    Lesson to oneself

Fuck yeah piss story thread! One time I tried to piss out a hole in the floor, inside the shelter of a Canadian grainer. This was during a pretty awful scary windstorm in Sask, and also on a moderately fast moving train. So, of course, all that piss just sprays me in the face. I manage to stop...

I think I have too much stuff

I'm in Norcal now, not super high elevation, but I'd absolutely not want to be without a warm bag. I go for less warm clothes and more warm sleeping bag because I can keep active, run around a bit, do some pushups, raise my body temp during the day, and know that when I gotta go sleep I'll be comfy.

Who hates drums? Sheesh. Keep your instrument as long as it gives you joy. I'd ditch a blanket or even better, the tent. Once you get south, rain won't be a daily part of your life and a tarp should do ya.... though you might have to ride out some wet times on the way down. Sleeping pads are...

Clothes for traveling through the america sw during winter.

Merino wool. Best thing out there. expensive, but not impossible to score off thrift stores. Aside from my important wool stuff, I usually pick up cheap thrift store warm layers then discard them when I feel like I'm carrying them more then wearing them.

places to hole up for the winter?

Also, yeah, I'm partial to Quartzsite. Four-ish years ago I stumbled into the place, new on the road, broke and confused with no useful skills. I met a lot of great people, learned skills that changed my life, and came back the next two winters able to really successfully sell shit that I...

places to hole up for the winter?

This fits some criteria and not others, but.... check out Quartzsite, AZ? It's nothing in the summer, but by winter it turns into a mess of flea markets, rocks and gem shows, and all the snowbirds from everywhere camped out in the desert. Once you get past them, there is lots of warm beautiful...

    places to stash your gear?

Along with my sleeping bag, I always carry a dark wool or fleece blanket. The uglier the better. Aside from being extra warmth or a pillow, it's a great prop for disguising my pack as a pile of bum trash. Tarps and trash bags are too reflective, and the dirty blanket seems a bit more offputting...

News & Blogs HitchBot is back - this time crossing USA

Wondering about this street vending thing... Did it all over the place for years, and this sure never happened. Now and then local police or city people would trouble me, and once a local got all wigged out. Never even had anything stolen, or if I did I never noticed.

    evolving strange house dwelling habits

I'm not too comfortable in people's houses. I've never had my own place and it boggles my mind to see all the "standard" stuff people feel they gotta maintain. Oregon

Oregon is great. Coast is laid back and liberal, inland is laid back and conservative =P Lot more to the state then the coast, too, btw. Get east of the cascades and its dry, rugged, with amazing rivers, mountain roads, dreamy hillscapes, either velvet green or golden depending on the season...

Need advice; short bus vs van pros/cons

Heya.. wasn't my bus and I'm no expert, but I lived on my friends short bus for a while, and she got that thing down some crazy rutted mud mountain tracks. Bus has awesome ground clearance, just feels a bit... tippy. Think it got 10-12 mpg, too.

    The nothernmost U.S. states

I've always had good experiences in the northern midwest. Camping in places without a lot of exposure to travelers can go either way, but for me its always been more like "the locals aren't embittered by transients so they just treat ya like a human being". Twice in MN I've been woken up by...

Agreement on not letting people call us bums. People need to learn a bit more about the people on the roads and streets and woods. Ain't nothin. I found eleven hawaiian pizzas once, and like thirty little cups of dominos dipping sauces. Dumpster score boasting aside, pizzas and pastries are pretty commonly thrown away. Party food, cheap to make, not worth leftovers or something. Oddest thing I found was a cupcake on a...

A couple questions about gear to carry while on the road

Mentioned this on another thread just now, but again... check out sawyer squeeze mini. I think its the cheapest, smallest, lightest, longest lasting filter out there. Works on a bottle or as a gravity filter. Costs $20 on amazon or walmarts that stock it.

A couple questions about gear to carry while on the road

Pots n pans... best thing I've found is to just go to a cheap shit store and get a coated nonstick POT, not pan. Take the handle off and ditch it, there goes most of the weight. Use leather or one of those camping pot grabbers or something. Its non stick, so can use it for pan stuff and pot stuff.
  47. Wawa

Should I get a lifestraw bottle?

Check out the sawyer squeeze mini. Its tiny, lasts forever, and you can put it on a bottle or hang it with a bag like a gravity filter. Sometimes walmarts carry them for $20, comes with a little water bag that wears out fast, but the filter is legit. Don't let it freeze.

I hope I'm doing this right!!

The important thing to take away from this is that a good used bike is always always always better then a shit new bike. Seriously some of these things people ride are barely repairable, not meant to have parts replaced. Look for old mountain bikes with no suspension, especially older trek ones...
