About 9 years ago, at 17 years old, I had found this website and used it to talk to many different people from all over the world. I wanted to escape home in Miami and see the world. I packed up all my shit with my guitar and set off on foot to hitchhike up to New Jersey where i had a friend who had moved. A few hours later, a few cops were bringing me back home. My mom had tracked me down somehow.. I guess I was too dumb to cover my tracks.. I was sent to a mental hospital to get evaluated and was released in a few days. My family (mom and grandparents) told me I was insane. I spent the next 9 years here living with them. Over the past 9 years I have been skateboarding regularly, making art, was part of a "spiritual" program, and have also taken about 40 college credits sporadically.. I love my family to death, but every time I have had an idea outside of working and going to school, it seems as if they do everything in their power to change my mind, it sometimes seems as if they work together to do so. Over time, I have begun to realize how toxic it is for me to be around people who bring me down constantly and tell me what I should be like. When I tell them about my dreams they laugh at me. I know to some of you this may sound stupid.. "why not just leave".. but Miami is all I know. I have some money from work and more coming in (hopefully) from a car crash I was injured in. I have my eyes on a Surly Long Haul Trucker I found used. My plan is on Saturday, after I go get my taxes done, to begin packing up and getting ready for a vacation from this miserable rat race that goes nowhere. I plan on using workaway to learn about permaculture gardening. Thank you all for keeping this forum alive.. I love reading the stories on here.

Dude, I would seriously consider heading out into the world and away from your family for a while. Anyone who puts their child in a mental institution for running away from home is seriously off base.

Traveling is alot easier to do when you are young, and if it is something you want to do, I would do it sooner than later.

Was once gonna make a thread about this "family members who don't like your lifestyle, or choices and how to deal with it" maybe this is the thread. I also have had a family member who was very much like, you need a full time job always, you need a house, your gonna be lonely if you don't make a family of your own ect... They could not understand my way of living and thought it was ridiculous for me to move around town to town/place to place and expect to make money/survive at the same time (which I did/do), I still interact with this person and when I do I just tone it down for them and don't give them the full extent of what iv been up to, it seems to keep them more relaxed.

Thank you. That is an excellent way to go about that situation.

Beat of luck. If you need any info on gear or routes to take, this website is full of em. Check out the forums.

Speaking of that, where are you planning on heading?

Good on ya for getting out there. StP was my gateway to hitting the road 10ish years ago and has been a valuable resource ever since. Study up, be prepared, and you'll have a great time.

Thank you everyone for the replies.. actually decided not to spend my money on that bike today, planning on taking a lil trip to new york with just my skateboard and backpack and some markers. Plannin on buying 9x12 inch canvases and painting them for sale on the street. only thing is i know its gonna be cold as hell if i end up outside the whole time. Already saw a post here of a few good places to sleep near nyc.. found a workaway 15minutes subway ride from manhattan, not sure if ill end up goin there.. was wondering if anybody could reccomend me a good sleeping bag or somethin? also waiting on my grandpa who is born in spain to call the embassy cause me and my mom want to become spanish citizens. Hope yall are doin well, good night! I wanted to get to Oregon from Florida but i dont know how well a person like me who everybody thinks is arabian would fare in the south trying to hitchhike lmao.. i walked into a mcdonalds somewhere in georgia one time and i think everybody in there even the goddamn kids stopped what they were doing to look at me lol.. i feel like if i were to hitchhike starting up north or maybe in california things might be different.. all i know is i dont wanna get stuck out in the middle of somewhere where people are gonna be lookin at me like an alien

dude wow that is funny I have never seen a dog so similar to mine!! mine is a girl and she is supposedly german shepherd thats what they told me at the rescue place. but she is definitely golden retriever i think. love your dog and the lil bandana hehe
Mines A female too. Charlotte, Charlie, Chubz, the last of which I have tattooed on my knuckes. :)
I also have her paw print on my elbow with the phrase "I got 99 problems but a bitch aint one" around it.
Serious.

Yours HAS to have some retriever in her. They have such good temperments.
I was so curious to know what Chubz was that I got her DNA done at the same time I got mine. SHe was mostly beagle /novia scotian duck trolling retriever. Exotic! It was only like $35 bucks, you should check into it.

I'm black and white. But have been mistaken for middle eastern, Mexican, etc. I'm pretty racially ambiguous. But I'm not telling you that because it's awesome. I'm telling you that I've hitched through the south. It's no worse than anywhere else. Great place to be in the winter. I'm planning to hit the road again in a week if I'm lucky. And when it gets cold, I'll travel through the south and/or west.

Don't let your race stop you. Just play it safe. If someone gives off bad vibes, take the next ride instead. That's true in the north too. There are racists above the Mason/Dixon. It was Pennsylvania where I met the klansman who put a gun to my head, not Mississippi.

Don't be afraid, but don't be stupid. Most of your rides are gonna be nice white people (especially Christians and hippies). Some crackers are cool people! Look around this site! Most of them are cool and I'm willing to bet that a good chunk are kick ass Caucasians!

Your race isn't an issue. The people who pick you up aren't doing so based on race. They're just trying to help their fellow man. The ones who don't like brown people are gonna drive past you. Keep smiling, keep rolling.
