I've never run into anyone that uses them, and I'm looking into one as the pack I have now is a little bit too big for easy hopping. And by little I mean 80 liters. Also have an old Osprey 34 at a friends but it's got a curved internal with a mesh screen. Great for the summer, not great for packing winter gear due to reduced functional/practical space.

Also, can the frame hold up being thrown onto/off of trains?

Its been years since i rocked a medium alice but as long as its rigged up without the external frame you will most likely be fine. Even if you have a big sleeping bag it should stuff in there just fine. Ive been carrying a new school acu camo army 3day assault style pack. It fits.

Currently lugging around a cheapo tent and sleeping pad (they take up a huge amount of room and are heavy as fuck, combined 9 lbs, 13 w/ sleeping bag) hence the 80. Looking into an ECWS 4-piece though. Thanks for the info man.

Good man. The ecws is good because its versatile & modular. You only gotta take what pieces you need depending on the seaon Sleeping pads are light as fuck but oftem too wide. I dont care for the yuppie type inflatable ones that are uber expensive. If your gonna carry one, just use a cheap one. Ripping them down with a razor knige length ways of few inches may make it less cumbersome but also less sleep space. Yoga matts tend to be mire plyable but lrss durable than sleep pads. I dont carry a pad but thats just me. Cardboard is a bountifull free insulator to keep you of the steeel floors & cold ground. I would save the tent for longer term stays anywhere. Bivy is fast, light & mobile but lacks the sitting in comfort during long rainy days.

If you are talking about CP foxholes then yeah, you can fit an alice frame through the diameter of the hole, albeit a bit cramped for style.

Yeah, the inflatables suck in weight and dimensions, but I got it for free so I can't really complain. Next time I hit a walmart I'm going to see if they have the blue foams. I can't stand all this fucking weight, the tent is really nice to have when it's set up, but when it's packed up all of this shit just destroys my back. I'm 6'2-ish but I have long legs and a somewhat short torso (measures ~17" on adjustables) so I'm looking into picking up a cheap ALICE with MOLLE pads and straps, and I'll probably just give this one to a homeless guy.

The only good thing about having a gigantic pack is that it's easy to strap my guitar to the outside.

Thanks man

Unsure if you have a homebase or are on the road fulltime. It wouldn't be bad to store the larger bulkier items for road trips with a car or any type of long term camp.

Fulltime recently, anything that I need to store is usually just in a friends basement - hence the post trying to sell a lot of my shit, haha

I see. Its prob best to sell/trade for what you need or just store it. Since when you need x,y z piece of gear it will be halfway across the country & cost more in shipping then to acquire a replacement on craigslist, a flea market, goodwill etc. Most times even if it fits in Flat rate box, you will "need" the item asap& not want to wait. Shipping/storing seasonal items can be smart (depending on the condition of the items) I have sent bulky clothing items to the dry cleaners. Most dry cleaners offer free storage if you pay for the cleaning in advance, this way your gear is safe & clean for winter time.

Getting back to those inflatable sleep pads, My friend has 1 that cost him $125 He is Fucking stupid!!!!! That is an insane amount for a sleeping pad. I can see paying that much for a quality pair of boots that will be used daily & will last decades.

Framed packs are great if you are doing the at/pct but for stealth & to ensure you don't pack too much shit, stick with no frame (internal/external). Its much easier to stuff that sucker where it don't want to go. If you get some expensive ass yuppie pack for free don't turn it down because you have a Chinese made Vietnam era ALICE. Packs are a dime a dozen too & wear out, try a few to see what you prefer.
