I'm going to do some bike touring soon, so I made a profile here in case anyone wanted to meet up during my travels. I used to be pretty active in my local punk/metal scene growing up. Unfortunately, I got caught up in hard drugs for a long time and when I was using I stopped caring about anything except for getting high. I moved to Oregon 5 years ago to get clean. I've been doing well here as far as staying clean goes, but I haven't made many friends and am growing bored. I've been working the last couple years while living rent free at my parents house. Now I've been investing the money I've made working into good bike touring equipment and I'm planning on saving the rest for the road. I'll be leaving mid may 2017. Oh yeah, I still smoke weed, so I'm down to burn on the road, but I no longer partake in any other substances.

Yeah the wind is gnar right now. Was gonna do some riding today, but probably won't happen with this craziness.

Welcome to STP! I do believe we have a couple people out there on the road now, and if you are on facebook - I can point you toward someone who has been out on the road for a while now. Also do check out our Bike Touring subforum too.

Cool. Yeah I've been lurking the touring section on here for a little while. There's some cool stuff. I'm going to be riding the transamerica bicycle trail west to east and then heading up the east coast to Maine. I want to start solo, but I'm down to hangout and ride with people along the way.

My brother did cross country - east to west - several years ago - went solo, then met up with another bicyclist mid way through - had a great time.

Tom Allen from TomsBikeTrip.com just released a book last week that I preordered called "The TomsBikeTrip.com Guide To Adventure Cycle Touring" which you can pick up for a paltry $6 bucks right now:

Amazon product ASIN B06XCK83KG
I'm only about 20 or so pages in, but it's looking to be a huge resource of valuable information on bike touring, so I'd say check it out.

Nice. I'll check it out. I also just discovered a tour leader mapped out an eastern express route for the transam. I think I'm going to make a thread about it in the touring section.

Good for you, and welcome. I can really relate to that introduction, I'm in the same boat my friend , what you said about playing music and losing interest because of the dope I can soo relate too and it's so true and terrible, I'm a musician too and ya it sure does zap all your creativity and just the soul. It's the most terrible existence I wouldn't wish the curse upon my greatest enemy, so anyways enough of my rambling , just trying to say much love and respect for overcoming it and never go back

Yeah man, hard drugs can ruin everything if you let them. I still play music occasionally, but after years of not doing it, I kind of suck. I'm going to be bringing a mandolin on my trip and learn to play it as I go. I've played other string instruments, so hopefully I can pick it up quick.
Once you get to Maine, contact me. I live in Moncton, NB, Canada if you're interested in going farther east
Will do. I have a good friend in Maine I might stay with for a bit, but if I get bored, heading north to Canada sounds fun.

Welcome aboard, i just joined the site myself. I went too Newport or somewhere near by years ago with a army buddy and rode 4 wheelers on the sand dunes, great place
