Just picked up a new bag this January, alps mountianering external frame. Million times more comfortable theny old 3 day assault bag (which had more stitches in it from me then the manufacturer) , and alot easier to get at things now w.o the zippers and large compartments.

Smart idea with the zip tiesDoes the trick. Even fashioned a beer pouch on the side.
Not pictured the 3 piece sleep system which I carry like a briefcase a lot of the time but has a shoulder strap on the outside bag for when I need both hands.

hey. yep, it all starts with sewing up holes and rips in pants and pack w/ floss. you get to enjoying it after some time. then graduate to making shit. I got the idea for the canteen from a train riding couple in the bay area CA who I worked for for a minute and who were DIY in almost every sense of the word. Good little peeps.. anyone ever touch a hair on their heads, be damned if I don't come and wreck them.
