Hey there, I'm Blueberry, or Em. I'm 18, and I've never traveled before, but I've wanted to as long as I can remember. Tomorrow I'm taking a bus to Minneapolis, and hopefully from there I'll be hitching out to the west coast.
Other than that, I'm a writer, been doing it since I could hold a pen, I'm a bit shy (but working on not being), and currently learning to play harmonica. I'm hoping to volunteer a bit as I travel, and would appreciate any advice you guys can offer.
 
Welcome here! But hey, until you travel - do read up on the stories and other info here that pertains to your travels and your gear. I used to hitch a lot when I was 16 through 22 yrs old - ok back in the 70's/early 80's and I normally traveled with my bestest girlfriend or solo. Had mostly good times, but hit some bad things too. Won't go into details on the bad times - but the three drunk guys in a car was bad. And I think things have perhaps changed for hitching since those times, I think anyway.

Gotta look out for that stuff. But like I said I have more good than bad experiences, but seriously take care of yourself - and plan - plan your gear, plan your phone/gps, plan your route and ALWAYS stay in touch with your parents/friends. But by all means - stay safe and have fun. And keep in touch here too!!!

Thanks Rude. I've actually been lurking for a week or two, and I've learned a lot. Of course, there's no substitute for experience

Do you know about wwoof? If I were you I'd check into that asap! Black Bear Ranch in the Siskiyou is a good place to initiate some experience.
