Howdy everyone. As of two weeks ago, my parents officially withdrew all ideas of supporting my future college career financially over religious turmoil between them and I. I've lurked on the reddit boards /r/vagabond and /r/hitchhiking for the past 7 months or so out of curiosity, and since my possibility of college education is looking increasingly bleak, I'm taking greater interest in the traveling community as a possibility for at least a year or two while i figure out my next plan of attack. Looking to start traveling this summer once I graduate, starting with a trip across the country to Boston to visit my sister, then a trip down to the Mormon colonies in Mexico to visit my grandmother. In the meantime I'm looking to just learn as much as I can, while I can. I'll see you all around I suppose.

Well welcome aboard to STP. I understand the frustration with the situation (not with church though), however you are young and decisions are many and hey - changeable too. College? If you can - cool - my blah blah degree does nothing for me - choose your program wisely. You can fund your schooling via loans etc, but look closely for scholarships and grants - pell grants.

And scholarships! Look at them too - each school has a lot of them - sometimes all it takes is an essay geared at a certain area/reflection. I have a $1500 scholarship in my department that no one even submits an essay for. One student looked at my form and stated - "I have too many papers to write I don't have time for that". Dam!! - free fucking money!!

So that said. Consider that but hey take some time off and travel too if decided. I did that for a while. Mom told me I'd lose my "study skills". And that was BS.

OK taking MOM hat off. :) And go enjoy your life - visit your family and have fun.

Welcome, and man, no one should rush into post secondary right after they finish anyhow. Take some time to explore the world and learn about yourself before blowing a ton of cash on a piece of paper.

Hey, and thanks for the welcome! I'm glad for the advice in from both of you, and don't worry; i'm not giving up on college education to go chase some Jack Kerouac dream. I'm still planning on getting myself into college, just want a year or two to get my restlessness out of my system and figure out finances through other means. My parents are quite well off, so until i can get them off of my FAFSA, or convince them to give their heretical son some money, financial aid will be hard to come by.

i suppose one way to get yer folks off yer ass financially would be to support yerself financially (travelling or not)...making them giving you money not a issue.

also take @Tude 's advice its what she does for a living so if anyone here knows the ins and outs of getting scholarships and grants its her.

but personally i agree with @wizehop. i got my ged at 16 and never regretted it. having a degree and owing the money was never worth it for me (i dont have wealthy parents) to have a piece of paper. i dont have interest in any job field that requires any kind of education that isnt hands on learned on the job, but with that being said i got a pile of bullshit certificates from different jobs saying i can operate a certain piece of equipment or administer cpr and what not, and i got all of those while being paid to be there in the first place!
