Compression Sleeping Bags

Tried to see if this has been posted before, but I haven't found it in this section...
So, have any of you tried out the Compression Sleeping Bags? The ones that you can fit into a small (usually bright orange, of course -_- ) bag and fit into your pack? I've been kinda iffy on shelling out the money for one of these, but since I like to travel light, I've been considering it more and more...


Note: I don't mean the sleeping bags that come from Walmart, etc. and come with a "compression bag" that doesn't really help much at all. I'm talking about the ones that come from REI and such. What I really mean to ask, is are the expensive ones really worth it?
 
I use comp sleeping bags.. I have a 20 degree and a 45.. Theyre really easy to pack.. I only use the compression sack when I know I won't be on the back of a car and decide I'm
cold.. I just shove it in the top of the pack for easy access. Actually sometimes I can pack better without using the actual sack. Sometimes they just don't work out and it's best to just shove the bag in.. As long as it a compression type it will squeeze right in. If its time to get off of my ride, in a jiffy I just open the pack and shove it in.. Off the ride and walking out like i was never on the choo choo. Using the actual sack you would stuff the sack then put it in the pack burning precious seconds.

I say definitely go with one and be happy you did.
 
I'm high tech tho.. I also carry a Therm a Rest sleeping pad used with a Klymit X Frame (torso length) inflatable on top of that. I sleep very comfortably.
 
~I second Dustin. Compression bags are wonderful for going light/// I have a Kelty 0 degree comp sac...yeah it's kind of spendy but they really make most unbearable sleeping situations bearable.

Yes, well worth it; but the expense can be avoided.

I was looking for a new bag for this season online but really didnt wanna shell out the dollers.
I took my old shitty suisse sport bag (which had its own compression sack, but this was a $30 bag on amazon) into Outdoor World (they dont have alarms, I know the REI in the Springs doesnt either.), any bigger outdoor department store will do.

Found a stupid looking dude that worked there, told him my compression sack was ripping and I needed a new one for my bag, of course he showed me to the compression sacks. He went about his business, I pulled out my bag and acted like I was testing different sacks on the floor for the right fit on. I stuffed my into a few sack and every emplyoyee that passed gave me the old "Ive been there before" smile. When the coast was clear I grabbed a Marmot Plasma of the rack( a $350 doller bag) stuffed it in my old suisse sport sack, and my old bag in the marmot sack. I grabbed an $18 Kelty compression sack and walked to the register.

I put down the Kelty sack, the ditzy girl at the register asks "is that all" and I explained I brought my shitty bag (and even showed her the little tear in my original sack, HOLDING THE FUCKING MARMOT BAG IN IT) in to make sure I bought the right compression sack for it.

I paid 18 bux for a compression sack an got the dopest bag Ive ever owned for free.

-I know most of these store have cameras instead of the alarms at the front. Be weary of the cameras and get out quick after switching out bags.
 
Chek out seal line dry bags they're nifty I put my sleeping bag/clothes in it. Nice because I can set up a tarp shelter and have dry clothes/sleeping bag when I'm done.
 
Yep. fInally replaced my old down compression sack that I got from my parents, thing is older than I. Still warm as hell once I got all the lumpyass down into the right spot, hah.
But yeah, if you can get your hands on one definitely worth it.

One thing of note, when you aren't travelling with it don't keep it in the compression sack, hang it loosely somewhere to air out. Also keeping it compressed like that isn't great for the fibers that keep you warm.
 
Im not super stressed on the zipper its only about 18 inches.I figure its a good replacement for the green patrol bag in my MSS.
 
Check out craigslist. I found an old North Face down sleeping bag for 20 bucks. I love it. If you have a compression bag that is down, don't leave it in the compression bag for long term storage. And when rolling it up, it helps to roll it loosely once and then more tightly a second time.
