barges?

I'm interested in hopping on a shipping barge and floating g the mississippi river from like st louis to maybe nola? Does anyone know if this has or can be done?
 
Make sure you take $$$ bribe the crew. If u go with a canoe like Cornelius said make sure to do the research. The big muddy is a complicated waterway that will kill u if u don't know what you are doing.
 
Try to find a barge crew that is really setup. We used to get them in Houston quite a bit. They eat damn good and might trade labor for food and a spot to sleep.
 
My friend Matt Riley did that float about 20 years ago with a bunch of punks. It used to be a thing, not sure if it still happens or not but it can certainly be done. He was on some plywood shit they built on 55 gallon plastic drums. He said it was pretty rad, a lot of folks that live on the river would invite them onto their property for feasts, or to camp. You can find a few stories written up online searching "punks float Mississippi".
 
I left the towboats after being out for the last six years. I would advise against it. Marsec is pretty high and we were required to report to the coast guard. The amount of legal trouble plus the type of guys who make up the bulk of river crews, I don't think there's much of a chance of not getting stuck in a cape gerardeau jail, In my opinion. I think you would be a lot safer and comfortable shadow camping in a kayak. There are millions of places along the river to boondock. Plus you can just portage the locks.
