Any experience with electric jackets socks and other heated items?

are these heated items of clothing 'stand alone' ? the ones I've seen were 12volt and needed to plug into a cigar plug socket in a vehicle - and thus seemed a bit pointless as said vehicle probably had a heater anyway ! I'm in the UK though, so maybe you guys have something more advanced....

I have a DeWalt it works great it's got a removable battery to recharge it last a good 8 hours on high and 12 on low it's great and it has usb ports to charge your phone
