Question Advice for a newbie hitchiker

So, I'll start off by saying that I haven't hitched before. I'm very young and I just graduated high school. I'm planning to start my hitching travels through the Midwest and West within the next year (I gotta work and get enough money for travel gear). What are some things I should keep in mind for my first time hitchhiking?

Welcome to the website, please search it for hitchhiking tips already posted. There are a ton, many contradict each other, so it goes.

I'd recommend reading "The Anarchists Guide to Travel" it has some great info for the beginner traveler and includes an entire section for those new to hitchhiking.
