A lot of people will just find terrain to camp on that's favorable, but everything may be downhill if the rain falls, they are in a swamp, or the ground just isn't pretty enough. If you're camping with just a sheet and some rope for an A-frame tent, you can layer long branches underneath you to keep your sleeping bag elevated in case of rainfall, which can be more comfortable than memory foam, and allows you to camp on any environment, including overtop of a gorgeous body of water (with branches laid out in a # pattern.)
My favorite alternative to digging trenches.
