sleeping bags

I've been looking for a small sleeping bag, and I dont think there is such a thing. I picked up a regular sized bag, my friend said it was the smallest one he'd ever seen, but the thing isnt going to fit in my pack. I figure I'll just strap the thing on there. Is there a preferred method anyone...

Is it any more difficult to catch rides with a bed roll strapped to your pack? Just seems to make it look like you are carrying so much more and maybe ppl will be less apt to pick you up if you look super loaded down.. Especially if you're traveling with say... Two others and a dog. Yeah? No?

Has anyone tried this before? I have a 0 degree bag that is a bit too big and heavy to be carrying around constantly, and I doubt I'll be voluntarily going to any place where it gets that cold. I want to cut and sew it a bit to make it smaller and lighter. I know that will greatly compromise...

I prefer canvas. I have an old 1944 US Army sleeping bag. It's got an outside waterproof bag and a detachable lining. Dries pretty fast if it gets wet. Pretty warm as well. It is a tint tad bit heavier than my modern polyester one. What do you girls and guys prefer?
