Wintering in Canada with a bicycle touring setup

The main problem I have with the Island & Sunshine Coast during the winter is the rain. That's why I generally hang in the Okanagan &, in the winter, the mountains around Osoyoos.

Living the Van Life a Cheaper Way to Travel by the Backwoodsman Magazine

Having lived 'illegally' for about 34yrs, I'd say that the psychological effects in my case (& many others that I've met doing the same) have been overwhelmingly positive.

corona virus: leave town and go to the woods a bit

I'm lucky insofar as I'm both in Canada and living off grid is what I do. I've got at least 2 months of food in my rig, water filters, and lots of places to camp. I'll just head out and not come in contact with a bunch of people.

Best Breed Of Dog For Travels.

While I love Pitties, there's a lot of BS out there about them and that can bite you in the ass. I basically prefer shorter furred dogs since they're easier to keep clean and free of external parasites (ticks n fleas). Medium sized, up to around 60'ish lbs is the sweet spot for me. I also prefer...

    Locks and bicycle security.

You might want to check out this Youtube channel: LockPickingLawyer - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm9K6rby98W8JigLoZOh6FQ Many locks are so easy to defeat that they're a joke.. including u-bolts.

    Solo Stove review (camping mostly).

I suppose you *could* seal a canoe with the skookum blob I coughed up the last time I had a head cold.

    Storm kettles

I've been looking at getting a Kelly Kettle. They make 1 that holds about 0.8L and is smaller then the basecamp or scout models.

    Eating Utensils / Cutlery

I use a large tablespoon, my Leatherman multitool and, if I need a fork, 2 sticks as chopsticks.

    water purifying?

I did some studying and finally settled on a Sawyer. I also picked up an inline charcoal filter that Katadyne sells for times that I'm worried about chemical contamination.

    Solo Stove review (camping mostly).

Amazon sells what are basically Chinese clones of the solo stove for around $20. I picked one up and it looks to be pretty skookum. Checked on Youtube for reviews of the various clones and and they were basically positive, so I figured 'why not?' and bought one. Was thinking about carrying a few...

What kind of shoes do you wear while traveling?

Vasque full leather heavy hiking boots.

Do you recommend traveling with or without a vehicle?

If you travel in a vehicle you'll need a source of income and plan to have money set aside for emergency repairs or just maintenance. The freedom to go most places at a moments notice is great, but it comes with a price tag.

BARF (Bones And Raw Food) On The Road

I feed my dog Actrium brand kibble from WalMart. It's actually a pretty high quality dog food, plenty of protein & fat, and won't break the bank. It also doesn't contain ground yellow corn. My dog also eats my leftovers & cleans the dishes. I purposely buy pork with the bone(s) still in and she...

How do you guys keep your dogs clean?

I generally don't wash my dog. Rivers, lakes, and rain take care of that. If she were to roll in a dead animal or cow shit, then yeah, I'd use a mild soap/water to get the smell off (she sleeps in my bed with me).. but that's it.

Photos share pictures of your buddy

This is my new girl Miel, a street dog from Puerto Vallarta that I adopted. I had to Euthanize my dog, Coco (20yrs old), during Christmas and couldn't live without one in my life. Miel's my birthday present to me, much like Coco was my x-mas present 16yrs ago.

Do you recommend traveling with or without a vehicle?

If I didn't have a dog I'd definitely throw on a pack and go shanks' mare.

Advice for rubber tramping with no AC

I have 6x100W generic monocrystalline panels and Unisolar 63W amorphous panel with 2 MPPT controllers. I need this much, if not more, to get any kind of decent power during our 'wet coast' BC winters. The fan is a Bosch unit I bought as surplus. The fan can get a bit noisy, especially during...

Advice for rubber tramping with no AC

I have solar panels on the roof and a vent near the ceiling in the rear which has a large 12-24v computer fan acting as an extractor. The fan is hooked directly to my solar panels so, when the sun rises, the fan automatically turns on and, when it sets, the fan turns off. There's a switch inline...

    Van, bus or trailer?

I live in an '85 Grumman step-van I converted. It has a 14' box and is pretty skookum. It's SUPER easy to work on (one of the bonuses of being designed for commercial use) and I could remove the tranny without leaving the vehicle by unbolting the floor! Flat glass makes replacement a breeze, any...

    Hey there. I'm Willy

I've been travelling for over 30yrs and don't plan to quit. I generally hang around the Okanagan BC and currently living 'the pickers dream' (on disability) in an '85 Grumman steppie up the mountains outside of Osoyoos BC. Going to head down to the Sunshine coast in a bit and maybe spend a few...
