Featured Spent the past week sailing around the San Juan Islands...

Hawaii has a bad rep in the cruising scene. And deservedly so for many a reason. Sailing between islands is full on offshore conditions with weather windows absolutely necessary because of how the channels between the islands accelerate the winds. There aren't a lot of natural harbors...

Links to CL boats in Puget Sound/Salish Sea under 5k

This video is more proof!!! I had the privilege of playing a mentoring role in this story in two ways. One, (which is the theme of this thread) by sharing the knowledge that you can do incredible sailing journeys on very cheap boats and, two, by giving tips on the buying processs of the...

    Hawaii - Changes for 2019

I think Florida is the worst when it comes to making the marginal anchor out lifestyle impossible. As anchorages are slowly being replaced with mooring fields, the folks on shore who inhabit the Mcmansions buy enough really cheap boats to occupy all the moorings infront of their property. Oh...

    Minimalist Sailors in Hawaii?

I have seen sea going collectives on larger boats so it can be done. Smaller boats are cheaper and easier to maintain and I have seen the sea going collective in fleet form. It is all quite doable and with forums like this, organizing is very possible.

    Minimalist Sailors in Hawaii?

Sailing along a coast has so many more variables that an ocean passage in the trades doesn't have. Coastal passages are way more complex with all sorts of challenges. I agree about the open ocean being more daunting if one hasn't done a long passage. There is far less of a safety net. I...

    Hawaii - Changes for 2019

The cruising scene is not so strong here in Hawaii.... It just isnt as popular like the South Pacific. I asked the customs agent in Hilo which is the main port of entry how many boats clear in per year and was told 60 with the majority in May from Mexico. If you figure the majority of the 60...

    Minimalist Sailors in Hawaii?

According to the rules, you can anchor anywhere for 72 hours. After that you have to move or if in a harbor you have to obtain a permit from the DLNR, a state agency. Permits are granted 30 days at a time for a maximum of 120 days per harbor per calendar year. Obtaining a permanent permit so...

    Hawaii - Changes for 2019

The state is making a few changes this year that will affect minimalist sailors, like myself. Liability insurance of 500K is now a requirement even for temporary permits. DLNR has to be listed as additional insured. There is also now an inspection for a temporary permit. I just had mine...

    Minimalist Sailors in Hawaii?

I have met so few other sailors living aboard here in Hawaii, I am actually resorting to the internet to find them! There are some of the yachtie variety but in terms of modest boats and minimalist means I am surprised at how few there are. You would think this place would be super popular...

    sailors in Florida/NOLA?

Sad to hear the bay area isnt what it used to be..... I sailed away in 2006 and haven't been back. I did the east coast in 2015 and found Florida to be a nightmare for minimalist sailors. Maybe Key West is doable but so many coastal towns want to make anchoring out illegal. About the east...
